SPG points are one of the harder to accumulate but they are also very valuable. Imo the best redemptions for spg are cat 1-3 where nights cost 2-4k. I'm sure sone will disagree. Spg also has 5th night free and cash plus points which can be significant. Top cat (7) redemptions are 30k. 6 - 20k, 5 - 12-16k, 4 - 10-12k
As far as SW goes, if you fly that so much, let me recommend the companion pass, where you can get upto 2 years of free travel for 2 on southwest. It's basically a BOGO deal.
I would strongly recommend the United card along with csp for both you and your SO. Referral offers for both are available, so you can refer your gf for additional 10k points on both.

I'm going back and forth on getting the SPG biz or the Ink Plus. Both $5k spend. More rewards from Ink + but SPG are more valuable and I see myself using those more. I can't do both right now and I don't feel like doing $5k+ in MS. The only reason I'd consider the Ink over the SPG right now is the BS Chase is about to pull. I just don't know if I'll get enough benefit from those cards since I'm not a fan of United. Korean Air could be good though. Do people use UR for hotels or it's not as good a value?

Again, imo, hotel is not the best value because personally, I value airline miles more.
You can always use United miles on partners.
You got Korean which is especially useful for you because it's 60/90k rt on Air France to PPT. Pluss transfer to SW could make sense if you have the CP. And don't forget 1:1 to BA.
Earning potential on ink is phenomenal. Not so much on spg.

Yeah, I saw the 5x on a few things that I could take advantage of with my business so that it attractive. I may try out the Ink Plus biz before Chase goes stupid. I can do the SPG biz after. I already have those 30k+ SPG spent combined with the points I have now
Again though, 20k SPG is 25k air miles on most except greedy United. How much do you value 25,000 air miles, $500-$700? St Regis Rome 750 Euro which is about $850 costs 20k SPG. The other place I'm looking at is the Westin Whistler next Christmas/New Years where the rooms are about $900-$1000 usd per night. And remember when you use SPG on hotels, especially in Europe, it includes the VAT.

Youre right. That's why it's YMMV. I'd rather get a free 700$ flight and stay in a cat 1 to 4, than stay in a cat 5 to 7
Also, I've noticed, at least in spg case, lower cat redemptions almost always yield better value. Usually $110-$140 or 3000 points for cat 3 for ex

I get this for sure and it's my usual philosophy.
But you know the saying, "When in Rome..."
I just booked 3 nights at the St. Regis Rome in a Deluxe King, which is upgraded from the standard room (high floor, more sqft, etc) and it cost 64,500 SPG. Wiped me out until I get the biz card.
That would've cost about $3,300 after taxes. I'm getting $.05 per point

1 night away from getting 1 night free! If you have any spg status, maybe book a lower level room and get that 4th night in for 5 nights and hope for an upgrade?

I wish. We're on a tight schedule and have 2 nights in Florence lined up after that. Then 1 night in Venice where it's easier to fly to Latvia from.
6/21-6/24 Roma - leave early on train to FLR
6/24-6/26 Firenze - leave late morning on train to VCE
6/26-6/27 VCE to RIX by AirBaltic early evening
This way we get 3 full days in Rome, 2 full in Florence, and 1.5 in Venice.

Im glad you popped in here amerikop. You definitely are pretty knowledgable. I might not agree with 100% of your advice, but pretty close. I've been busy as shite and haven't had time to give the detailed advice and teddys advice was getting pretty tired...if you know what I mean.

You're afraid to sit in one because it will change the way you play the game.

Haha but I have. I have gotten quite a few upgrades on oneworld. Also bbeen on flights paid for by parents when I was in college.
I totally agree they are way better. But I just don't feel like spending the 2x miles due to a conservative approach thats all.

Im about to apply for the Sapphire. Does it have a referral bonus? I would be happy to put your name down if it does for all of your advice
Posted on 2/13/16 at 8:22 pm to Merica
Appreciate it. Will send referral asap. Currently out and about.

What's this about? The 5 app/24 month thing?

the ink has been a no brainer for me. I have about $300 in monthly cell, sat tv and phone service. That alone is 18k points annually at 5x. If you can throw some of your Amazon, Starbucks, southwest etc spend through office store gift card purchases it is not hard to justify the annual fee.

I honestly don't know why anyone would keep a Sapphire Preferred as their permanent Chase card (willing to pay the annual fee if it doesn't get comped) over the Ink.
Speaking of, I need to go buy a couple more Whole Foods gift cards at 7x...

2x at restaurants? Makes sense if you eat out a lot and don't have the Citi Prem. But I agree. Since I got the ink and the prem now, I will probably cancel csp this year. I paid the AF this year because of primary rental car coverage and I didn't have the ink until recently.
