Here is what I would do:
Option 1: Ask your vendor if there would be any discounts if you paid cash up front. If you can save 4-5%, I would go that way. This is not hard to get. If my knowledge is right, most credit card companies charge 2.5%-3.5% processing fee. They could pass these savings on to you. I would even go so far to push the vendor for this a little.
Option 2:
Sign up for multiple CCs. Keeping recent developments in mind, here is what I would sign up for:
Chase Sapphire Preferred ($5k) - 60K Chase Points
Chase United ($2k) - 50K United Points
Citi Hilton Reserve ($2.5K) - 2 Weekend nights at any Hilton Hotel + $100 + Free Annual Night
If you are anything like I was, as a college student, you probably eat out a lot. Sapphire gives a 2x bonus on restaurants and waives first year AF.
This will give you potentially ~112K UA miles and 2 free nights at any Hilton in the world just from the bonuses. You could add some nights on either end and make a vacation out of it.
You could also add a couple more cards to your portfolio and pay your expenses on it to get those other nights for free too.
For perspective:
- It is 60K UA miles RT to Europe, 75K to South Pacific, 60K to South America etc.
- If you are going to get married within the year, you could have at least 2 but upto 3 nights at a top tier hilton property for your honeymoon worth upto 285K points or thousands of $.

I like the Sapphire and the united, Im not sure if the Hilton would come in handy or not because we will likely being going somewhere tropical.
I was looking into the Amex SPG and it seems that the points are a bit more flexible. I could also ask my girlfriend to get one and we could double up on the initial bonus points. Can you transfer those points to another person and are they as flexible as they seem?
I think knocking out at least air fare for the honeymoon would be huge and well worth the trouble.
Thanks for the info so far guys, great stuff.

You should figure out what you want the points for. Hotels, airline and which one.
I have always flown Southwest so I am honestly not even sure what other airline I would go with. I am much more interested in flights than hotels bc we often Airbnb or priceline a cheaper hotel since we are not usually in the room much anyways

my FICO was around 760. I can also get my girlfriend to get a card or two as well bc she has good credit but only currently has 1 CC.

Why hasn't anybody asked where you want to go on your honeymoon, considering she says yes?
Posted on 2/12/16 at 9:53 am to LSUAfro
6 years invested, she better say yes
We have been discussing something tropical where we can just relax since we will both be graduating soon before or after we are married.
But we usually like to explore on vacation so I would not rule out a trip to Europe somewhere.

I see. I'd stick with the earning of Chase/United points then for possible Europe.
You may want to also consider the Barclays Arrival Plus cards. $440 towards any travel expense. That can help subsidize vacation costs, such as private villas or train tickets.
Oh and congrats...I think

Why do you think Hilton and Tropical won't go together?
Check out Hilton Nui in Bora Bora, Hilton Labriz in Seychelles, Maldives, Mauritius etc. All these properties (except Mauritius which is undervalued imo) are top tier properties in tropical locations.
If your gf is ready to sign up for some cards too, then the possibilities are endless
SPG points are flexible because they can be transferred to almost any airline at a 1.25 ratio (if you're doing increments of 20k). I'd go for that one only if you think you will fall short of an award redemption on a flight and can meet the added min spend.

I have every intention of visiting the Hilton Conrad Koh Samui one day.

Expire in a year from when you earn them. So make sure your timing is right. If you time it correctly, you could have three weekend nights per card. If you are sure you want to do hilton,my strategy would be to accrue points for 4 more nights, get the 5th one free, add 3 free night certs for a 8 night vacation on a top Hilton property. And yes - those certificates will work on those properties.

Was there for 2 nights this December. Good property. I would recommend making sure you're diamond when you go there for one of the seafacing rooms.
However, I can think of a few better places than Koh Samui for honeymoon.

okay so I would just have to book within a year or actually take the vacation in a year, because honeymoon will likely be next May-June
Posted on 2/12/16 at 10:36 am to Merica
Book and use within the year from when you earn them.
You could also look into Chase Hyatt card in 3 months from when you apply for these cards. $1K spend = 2 nights at any hyatt, anytime. You + SO = 4 nights. Add 4 Hyatt Weekdays to 3 Hilton weekend nights. Hyatt's are limited in # of properties though, so you want to make sure where you're going first.

Damn that may be a problem then bc I have to actually ask soon to get the ball rolling on getting married lol which would mean I would need to pay off the ring before this may-June
Is first year interest free? I didn't see that it was but if it was I could wait a few months to pay it to delay the certificate. Also If the certificate doesn't cover the waterfront rooms could you at least get credit towards those rooms?
It would be perfect though for both of us to get a card and have 4 weekend nights and just fill in the week nights and airfare. Would save a nice chunk of change and if I did the sapphire as well we could save a lot on airfare

Speaking of SW...Both Barron’s and Wall Street Journal are currently offering a $1 option for a 3-month subscription. You can choose the digital-only option or the paper + digital option – both have the $1 rate. I just paid $1 for a wall street journal subscription and go 1,100 SW miles (Also counts towards companion pass)

I swear I have the worst timing with my age. Get out of college, economic collapse, get into law school, legal field collapse, etc. Steady job for credit cards, game collapses. It's gonna come my way eventually.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one. I bought my first home in late 2006 in Hawaii. While you may think we were 2 years away from issues with the housing market, I could have bought my place for nearly $100k less 6 months later. We were feeling a decline in tourism and housing pricing in 2007. I was living in SF and going to college during the dot com boom and bust. Saw so many opportunities that if I just had the money I have now
The one that's still grinding my gears is the IHG card that I couldn't get until May because of buying my recent condo in Waikiki. As GeauxTigers will attest, I could've had any time in April or May at the Bora Bora IC but now it's impossible and they're about to raise the rates to 60k a night
My family has always joked about "frick Murphy, it should be named after our last name".

70K points more for a week. Doesn't make it THAT out of reach. Especially with IHG.

I have used AwardMapper and check IHG site nearly everyday. Please share if you have something or if you prefer offline I'd be happy to give you my email. I have been trying to get my wife and I there for almost a year now. We have enough points to do 5 nights or more if we do points and cash. She really wants to go.
