2x at restaurants? Makes sense if you eat out a lot and don't have the Citi Prem. But I agree. Since I got the ink and the prem now, I will probably cancel csp this year. I paid the AF this year because of primary rental car coverage and I didn't have the ink until recently.

I have a regular Chase Sapphire that I downgraded from CSP. Not sure if that is awesome or keeping me wedded to Chase UR when I should start considering other options.

Our Eating Out/Alcohol budget is $525 a month so I get some fair use out of it, but that wouldn't cover the annual fee if I had one.

I, like Teddy, downgraded to the no-fee Sapphire back when that was possible. Even still, there are other 2x dining options I would use before I would even consider paying an annual fee on a card on which I would need to spend almost $10k on dining before I would break even. If the "perks of the CSP weren't utterly duplicitous of the Ink Plus, the calculus for me might be different.

Whole Foods gift cards at 7x

How do you get 7x on these?

The big difference for me on the CSP and Ink is that CSP gives 2x airfare. I usually charge my first $25k in UA airfare on the MP explorer card so I get the 10k bonus on top of 2x. Then I switch to the CSP to get points that could go to UA or other UR partners. I may start putting the excess on the AMEX PRG though so i can get 3x. I just don't care much for the AMEX transfer partners currently.

Speaking of branching out, someone make all of my important decisions for me and tell me which card to get next

I currently have:

Chase Freedom
Chase Sapphire (no fee)
Chase Ink Bold (they keep waiving my AF)
Chase Ink Plus
Barclaycard Arrival+ (will downgrade to no fee)

50k Chase United card since the 5/24 is going into effect for co-brands was the first to cross my mind.

I know I'm the 10 billionth person to ask this but I need a recommendation(s) on which card to get.

I'm in my late 20s, on active duty orders, married, like traveling a lot when work allows and most importantly, have never had a credit card other than a Barclays that I got just to pay off my apple computer interest free. The card has since been canceled.

Any and all recs are appreciated and if there are any other questions that are pertinent, ask away. Thanks.

Staples.com sells Whole Foods gift cards with email delivery, so that's an immediate 5x with an Ink card. Further, if you go through the UR portal, Staples.com has a (basically) permanent 2x bonus. The disclaimer swears that you don't get the extra 2x on gift cards, but I think they must mean on Staples gift cards, because I always get my email from chase confirming my extra UR points.

I wasn't kidding earlier about buying another couple hundred dollars worth of them, so I'll update this thread if/when I get my confirmation email from chase

I practically never fly United (generally fly out of BR when I can, NOLA when utterly justified). Is there something special about the card, beyond the healthy sign up bonus?

Depends on where you want to travel and how you want to get there. IE domestic vs international and economy vs. premium cabins.

Active duty members get annual fees waived by a few issuers, including Barclay's. While I generally only recommend Barclay Arrival+ for the $400 signup bonus and then cancel it, Barclay's is an issuer who waives the annual for active duty members.

Once we get your travel habits there can be real recommendations, which may or may not include the card I mentioned.

What are you doing with your Chase UR points?

Chase UR transfer to United to fly Star Alliance internationally. For example, I used United miles to fly from MSY to BKK and back. I didn't have to fly United planes the whole time.

I will be on active duty orders for a good bit longer but that may change. Hopefully they do t need to seenew orders every time the previous ones end.

Mainly traveling domestically but we love going to the carribean and are planning to do a Europe trip some time in 2017.

I don't care what seat I sit in on a plane. Just as long as I get there.

Almost exclusively transferring to Hyatt. Honestly, I'm embarrassed to say that the airline miles game strikes me as so much more complex than hotels, I've utterly stayed away from it. Then again, I haven't flown internationally since I started playing the points game, so I haven't had a real impetus to get out of my comfort zone.

In that case, I'd consider the IHG or Hyatt cards. Again, we're facing a deadline with Chase. IHG gives you a free night at any hotel (depending on award availability) of any category for only a $49 fee. That's a win easy.

Hyatt does the same for $75 but for Cats 1-4 and if a standard room is available.

"cash back" cards are probably the best for someone who flies domestically in coach.

These cards include:
Barclay Arrival+
Capital One Venture
Citi Double Cash
Fidelity Visa

All offer 2% cash back while Barclays offers 2.1% on everything, meaning no categories and keeping it simple.
Citi and Fidelity have no annual fee, but since you won't pay the fee on Barclay's that wins by .1% for continued spending. You also get a nice $400 signup bonus.

If you are willing to play "the game" with signup bonuses, then more cards come into play.

I will also mention that it sounded like you have no credit cards? If that is the case, you are going to have to build your credit profile before going for a true "Travel" card most likely. The Barclay card would fall under the "Travel" category while the Double Cash would not, which isn't a difference in practical usage but just in application strictness.

What's "the game" exactly? Sorry, new to this.

My wife has a credit card but it isn't hat great.

And just so we're clear, I don't have a credit card but do have awesome credit overall. I own a condo in BR that I rent out but other than that I have zero debt. When I applied for that loan my scored we in the high 700s/low 800s.

Also, why should I do the Barclays over the Capitol one card?

Finally, what about Amex or USAA?

I'd also like to add the Discover It miles card. This card doubles all of your cash back after the first year. This could mean 10x cash back on rotating categories. 3x on travel, 2x everywhere else. Also doubles cash back earned through discover shopping portal and friend referrals. So a good earning op there.

Cash back can be used for getting gcs off the portal which give better value than getting statement credit which will increase your return further.

Also - the Wells Fargo card gives 5% cash back on all purchases for the first 6 months.

The Amex BBVA card will give 5% CB on nba all star weekend and the two weeks of of the nba finals.

Last but not least - Chase freedom has 5% on rotating categories and 1% everywhere else l which could be used to transfer to partners if you went for the sapphire or ink down the line.

We're trying to keep this simple. USAA doesn't have any good offerings (I'm a USAA member).

Amex has some cash back options, but the we get into a bunch of categories and perhaps carrying multiple cards from different issuers to maximize the various categories. If you want go there, we can, but I'm trying to not overwhelm you.

Because Barclay's offers 2.1% cash back while Capital One offers 2% cash back. Don't let Capital One's marketing of "Capital One Miles" confuse you. It is a cash back card.

Both cards have annual fees, however, Barclay is $89 and Venture is $59. However, you won't be paying the fee on Barclay ($0) as you are military, so it wins.

I actually (outside of signup bonus) recommend Citi Double Cash because it offers 2% cash back with no fee at all, but since you aren't paying the fee on Barclay Arrival 2.1% > 2%.

Lastly, "the game" is applying for lots of credit cards for their sign up bonuses and cancelling them before paying any fees, along with other tactics, but you should read up on that on your free time and decide if that's for you, as it would take me hours to explain.

Ya, but after reading his initial post I'm trying not to get any more confusing and trying to find a card he will keep for more than 1 year in case he chooses not to do what we do.

Not everybody wants to do what we do. However, I bumped this to this page so he can read it.

Awesome. Thanks a lot man.

I appreciate you not trying to overwhelm me but if signing up for multiple cards is the best option I'm all for it.

Not looking to get 69 cards but if getting 2 or 3 will help I'm all for it.

Ya, there are some cheap wins. For example, you are married.

Your wife could get an Arrival+ and then you can get your own. When you finish, since each of you gets $400 in cash back, you have earned $800 off your trip just like that.

I recommend just reading a ton and getting to understand how to think about this stuff strategically, and to always keep in mind what your goals are. It is really easy to get in trouble accruing points and that is why credit card companies do it. Because most of the time, they win, not you.

ETA: I gotta go build a fence, but if you have further questions I'm sure others will pick up the convo with their own perspectives.
