re: .30-30 Winchester. Why so unpopular now?

I had a Savage 99 lever back in my youth chambered in 300 Savage. Killed many deer with it and traded it for a Remington 760 in 30-06. Decided years later to try to get the gun back and old' boy pawned it. Miss that gun and will probably buy another one day.

Yeah, pretty sure any place that has enough 9mm to stock on the shelves is going to give it as much shelf space as they can. Most big ammo makers are sidelining certain calibers and loads to increase production of what the market is demanding right now. Even certain 30-06 loads that I'm looking for are not being produced right now. But Academy had a pallet's worth of 30-30 in the aisle when everything else was sold out 6 months back.

re: .30-30 Winchester. Why so unpopular now?

I had a hard time finding 170gr .30-30 bullets a week ago. Had to go to 3 different stores

Used to be able to buy that shite anywhere that accepted cash.

I really wish my .30-30 was a .35rem, but that won't nearly keep it in the cabinet. It was my highschool graduation present and has been rolling deer like a champ.

Deer hunting calibers may have gotten bigger and badder, but deer are no tougher than they were in the days of the stick and string.

Don't hunt as much as I used to but use my Marlin 336 to varmint hunt a lot. Just a fun damn gun to shoot, but agree it is getting harder to find ammo....sucks !

I still have mine. It's over 50 years old. Actually my son now has it and plans on keeping it.

I talked to a bunch of people during the great crazy of '12/13 and there was a price hike on 30-30's that was pretty significant.

Guns that used to go for 3/400 were being sold for 5-600 and rounds were about as hard to come by as .223 and .22 b/c people thought the 30-30 was going to be next on the ban list.

Esp since they were making these:

I hunt with an iron sighted Marlin 30/30. It kills the shite out of deer within 100 yds. I've never understood the magnum craze. Just a waste of money IMO. You can only kill a deer so dead. Maybe these magnums kill em deader?

Because no one hunts in the woods anymore. Everyone hunts from a box stand because all the damn woods have been cut. There are no more days of hunting out of a rickety ole wooded lean up on a white oak ridge. I have one that I haven't shot in well over 10yrs. But I killed a pile of deer with it.

this is a much bigger topic that you probably don't want to touch

Deer have grown armor since the late 1800's, so the .30-30 is no longer able to kill the deer that live in the United States.

The lever action isn't going anywhere. The .30-30 might though. The marlin 336 is the only thing keeping it alive.

I always enjoy your gun insight and tend to agree on you on just about every topic, but I have to disagree on this. At least in the south, a lever gun will always be a 30-30. OP is dead on with the loss in popularity of the ole Winchester. You just don't see them like you used to. The Winny's fault, in my opinion is the top eject mechanism. People just don't use iron sights anymore and there is no "good" way to mount a scope on one. The Marlin shoots holes (no pun) in that theory, but I'm sticking with it anyway.

I have the shoot through mounts on mine and have killed deer with both. Definitely like open sights more

I missed my first deer with a 30-30 94 win, and killed my first deer with the same gun. I was young and dumb, and insisted on trading it for a 270 model 70. Every deer I ever shot was under a hundred and could have been taken with he old 30-30.

Hunted with one for five years and hated it. When I got my .270 the difference was night and day. So much more accurate especially at 200 yards.

You might be right. I forgot about marlin's attempts to get some new lever gun calibers out that were in the .308 performance range.

I just don't see my generation and the next keeping the .30-30 around much longer. I'll always have one.

Winny's top eject is definitely why I have a marlin. Next one will be a Henry though.

I think the lever action rifles are becoming a bit more in vogue than they used to be. Love to get a 1895SBL to match with the Gunsite scout.

re: .30-30 Winchester. Why so unpopular now?

problem with the winchester is putting a scope on it. i tried looked at several set-ups and never could find on that was any good because of the top-eject. marlin is a different story when it comes to putting a scope on them. bro-in-law has a .308 marlin laminated and stainless that is pretty nice. i'm considering a lever action ruger 338 cal for the next acquisition because i want to see how many piggies i can punch a hole thru in one shot.
