Sounds stupid as shite. When I was a youngster (and misguided and acting like a punk, so I'm not excusing or rationalizing my stupid behavior), the only thing I would ever steal is like air freshner from Wal Mart for the car.

But hell, at least that was useful.

I had a neighbor growing up who did this. He was kind of a dick.

Chromies are more useful to a kid.

Did that thing keep your bicycle smelling fresh? My chromies sure kept my bike looking badass.

Me and DI3 stole about 5 a piece. I came home and hid them under the garage freezer. That night as my grandparents were visiting, I receive a call from DI3's mother. "Tigerbru17, is this true?? Did you and him steal??" Long story short my parents beat the shite out of me and I had to personally return every chrome to the owners. The people I returned them to were like "why the hell would you want those??"

without waiving my fifth amendment right against self-incrimination, i may or may not have witnessed this as a child. they couldn't have been worth anything but the Augustinian need to do wrong for wrong's sake prevailed.

eta: an "we" (as in the people I knew who may have done this) called them chrome caps, not chromes. must be a regional thing.

I definitely used to steal chrome caps as a kid. In fact, there are still some in my old bedroom at mom's house.

In 5th grade there was a huge fad around school called stealing "chromes." Chromes referred to the metal valve caps on car tires. Kids would go around taking them off everyone's cars and showing them off at school. Some were cool like skulls or 8 balls.

YES. 37 yrs old. We did this often.

A thief is a fricking thief and is one of the lowest forms of human shite to ever pollute this planet. I don't care if they steal a million dollars or a fricking valve stem cover.

I definitely had "chromes" on my GT bike tires, but I never stole them. They were pretty cheap at Pep Boys...even the eight ball or dice ones.

The bmx bike thread got me thinking about this, because we would always put the caps on our bike tires. Were we the only middle school doing this??

I had some friends that did it. I never understood it though, and always tried to distance myself from it when they would roam parking lots looking for them. I always felt like I didn't want to be there if they got busted for that shite (not that they would've gotten in too much trouble looking back now..).

I just didn't get what was so cool about having a stash of chrome tire caps.

Reminds me we used to fold up paper into thick little mini boomerang looking things and shoot them at one another with rubber bands. Called them "tacos" because they kinda looked like tacos. They hurt like hell.
