Heading there next week and my friend is taking me to a steakhouse one night and an Italian place the next. So my last night ill be on my own. Staying near Times Square. Not looking to break the bank but can you recommend something for that night? Anywhere in Manhatten is fine. Want to try something other than Italian or steak though.
Any recommendations for lunch or breakfast would helpful too.

Breakfast--coffee and a bagel. NY bagels are awesome and you don't want to be too full for lunch.
Lunch/Dinner--safe choices for lunch--Pizza (John's for pies, Joe's in the village for slices), burger and cheap beer at the Corner Bistro, sandwich at Katz's. If you're more adventurous, try some ethnic food (Indian in the east village, Korean BBQ on 32nd street). Fancy Dinner would be any of the big name places (Gramercy Tavern-type joints). How often do you get a chance to eat in NY? I'd pick one meal to have at a fancy place. You can save money and do lunch at the Gramercy Tavern bar, and dinner at a Korean BBQ joint.

atera is awesome, and really wasn't that expensive. Try the scallops from the bar menu.
Sushi of Gari is DELICIOUS, not very expensive, and their sushi is super original. Just ask your waiter for some recommendations and go in with an open mind.

You're gonna need to narrow it down. We're talking thousands of options based on this criteria.
What kind of food? Good beer list? A dive/casual spot? Hip? Rustic? Sports bar?

I know you said no Italian, but the places at the top of my NYC list right now are all Italian. Heres a link for Maialino, which is Danny Meyers newest place, based on Roman style cooking: LINK
And Co is Jim Laheys pizza restaurant: LINK He's the proprietor of Sullivan St bakery, who brought no knead bread technique to the masses a few years back.
Finally, I would eat a sandwich from Porchetta every day of the week....LINK

I don't need to narrow anything down hombre. If you don't have a recommendation then leave.

Even in his own pedantic way he is trying to help you more efficiently. It's easier to recommend an experience out of the 20,000 or so in NYC if one knows what you enjoy in particular.

And when you don't narrow it down, you have someone who vacationed there once saying things like "LaMela is the best italian place ever, huge portions, right in little italy." And they say this because that is all they know.
If you do narrow it down, you might have someone with some knowledge give you a good recommendation on the top 3 sushi joints. But we don't know if you even like sushi...
