It's not as bad as it sounds my ten year lil angus does it. The dogs will pretty much have it penned down. Only injury he got last year was he got nipped by a dog coming in to get a piece of the hog. It is definitely an adrenaline rush

quote:

Why not just kill them? I understand the recreation aspect of it and if you kill them off in an area you wont have anything to hunt. Just pisses me off when I kill a hog rooting up my food plot, cleaning out my corn pile, or possible cleaned out several turkey nest and that bastard has marked ears.

Years ago. When my dad and his brothers were growing up they ran them for the meat. Our family had it's own registered mark and the other families in that area had theirs as well. That way you knew if you could kill that hog or not. I haven't marked a hog in 10 years and most of the ones they catch now they either killed immediately or put into a pen to fatten up for slaughter. I even remember as a kid going to buy a "blooded" hog to release into the herd to improve the blood lines.

You have to remember, when my dad was a kid, there were no deer in that area of North Louisiana. He grew up in a very remote area and didn't kill his first deer until he was 18. There were no range laws so people let their cattle and hogs go wherever. It's a different world now and they wish the hogs were gone. But in the 30's and 40's, if you were poor and there were no large prey animals, you did what you could to put food on the table.

I completely understand that angle of it. Now a days the majority of the catching and marking is all sport.

I've never "caught" one other than in a trap and they "catch" a bullet before I get close enough to try and catch them . I don't have the balls to run up behind one and grab it to hog tie it.

My father n law is just getting into this. He has been a deer dog man for 40 years. He ha two bay dogs , but is looking for a top "track"/trail dog. It's our understanding that this is the dog that will locate the hog(trailing it silently until it jumps) then the bay/pack dogs kick in. Any info would be appreciated.

I bought my dog with the intention of hog hunting him but he has gotten in thick with the wife and daughter. If something happened to him, I'd have to move.

I used to do it a lot, but I always went with people with the dogs and when they started slowing down I stopped and never really got back into it. It was a hell of a trip though.

Take a trip to Winnfield, La. and ask around for hog dogs. There used to be several folks breeding dogs.
There used to be baying dog competitions in Winnfield. Pretty fun watching those things corner a hog and bay it. This was done in a maybe 2 tennis court sized enclosed circle.
Anyone know if they still do this?

Far as I know they still do it. I used to go to the one in Plain Dealing quite a bit.

We used to just relocate for people. We would catch them and tie them up and then take them to property some of the guys owned and dump them off so they could do guided hunts.

I've done a lot of it. It's very easy to train dogs. The only thing I don't like seeing is dogs getting killed. If you go a lot it will def happen.

You've got bay dogs who track the hogs and nip at the hog, and then you've got the kill dog that actually is trained to take the dog down. I've seen variations of this though.

If you grab the hind quarters the hog is virtually incapacitated as far as being able to move.

I f you buy very good vest you can just about eliminate the deaths. In 20yrs weve only lost 3 dogs
the same hog killed all 3 dogs (pit/walker cross) and was only 175lbs. Cutters bout 2in.

He was a bad bitch, most got caught back then or we used a knife to kill them. He got a 44mag to the brainpan

our dogs do both.

the only drawback is sometimes the dogs chew the hog up pretty good by the time we get to them
