Two summers ago before they started getting more popular I was wearing one on the local bass lake. Was about 100degrees in August and I was covered head to toe in pfg style clothing and a buff - at the launch after a long day of fishin I had a local sunburned redneck ask me "son are you playing hide and go seek or what?". He shut up when I opened the livewell.
Little tip for the thread starter - if you see a trend getting popular in fishing/outdoor activities it's probably because it frickin works.

I wear mine around my neck when it is cold. Pull it up over my nose and face when I'm running to another spot, under my save phace. When it is really cold, I have a UA balaclava that is much warmer, but isn’t as comfortable as the buff. Digital desert camo, FWIW.

I wear mine mostly for mowing the yard.  It saves me and my allergies. And I don't like putting sun screen on my face.

I shouldn't have said trend - should have said gear or equipment. You know something that actually serves a purpose. I agree with you on salt life

I'll wear one sometimes. Keeps the sun off when I'm too busy catching hawgs to stop and put on sunscreen. That and when I'm feeling extra salt life.

Saw a USCG sticker the other day that read The Real Salt life accompanied by a picture of a helicopter dropping a rescue basket.

I used to always wear shorts, a short sleeve fishing shirt and a wide brimmed hat while fishing. Can't tell you how many times I spent the following week applying aloe vera. . . shite gets old.
Finally got around to buying long sleeve fishing shirts, the convertible pants/shorts and a buff. SO much more comfortable out on the water. It's nice not having to deal with sunscreen out on the water.
And like another poster stated: Who gives a frick what someone else is wearing?

Wear it for a number of reasons.
1) Keeps the sun off the neck, ears, and face. Skin cancer sucks!
2) Keeps the gnats off better than anything else.
3) I sight fish reds almost exclusively, and paired with the right glasses and casting platform, it gives me a major advantage over what others are NOT seeing. It helps cut the glare.
4) In the summer you dip it in the ice chest water and you are kept cool for quite a while.
Does it look wierd?... yes!!!! But helps while on the water, so I don't really care what it looks like.

I don't have one but it also helps when fishing. When you put on sunscreen if you don't wash it off your hands it can leach onto your bait. A live bait doesn't matter much but if fishing is tough you don't want something else to hinder your fishing.

I bought one before my trip to fish the Keys this summer. The guide was wearing one too. It beat getting burned or having to deal with sun block.

They gave us these things when I was in Iraq, theres a variety of uses for it, from bandana/dew rag style to a full blown baklava.

i use one for my multi-day kayak races. helps with the sun and keeps your hands sunblock free so your paddle doesn't slip and you don't get sunblock in your eyes.
They also help a lot with breathing in gnats and bugs when paddling through the night. used one of these and the yellow shooting glasses at night in a race in Augsut this year to help with bugs and seeing obtacles in the water at night. worked well and didn't have a sunburn to deal with
