That's your idea of "young and hip"?

That's an example of food columns written by people who are young and don't know squat about food.

You have to put up with a bit of smugness and occasional condescension, but he has good info sometimes.
His insistence on overemphasizing "POOR boy" is a bit grating.

No way he will only eat if it's free. I worked at a place he used to visit and he refused anything free..But this one time someone else at the restaurant bought his dinner and he gave me a 50% tip!!..He's quirkey, but hey most of the people on this board are.

That real Tom Fitzmorris website was GREAT ... but it must have been taken down ... I can not seem to find it now

That site was utterly ridiculous and juvenile. Started by one of the guys who obsessed over TF...the guy named Ridley, but he went by some other name a few times and on that site. I can't think of what it was. Some of the obsessive folks posted over there and put up fake quotes from other posters on the site. I looked at it a few times, but it was so stupid I didn't waste my time on it. I didn't find it humorous in the least. Oh, it was kitchy koo or something like that. I think it was something TF said to the poster, so the poster took that name and started the site.

TF is knowledgable and provides good info. He's just not very nice when he doesn't agree with you. He talks down to people instead of with people. I believe him when he says he pays for all of his own meals. That's not to say that someone doesn't slip him a taste of something and won't put it on the bill, but he insists on buying his meals. The thing is that when he enters a restaurant, 9.9 times out of 10, the people know he's there and bust buns to make the meal and service as good as it can possibly be, so you have to take some reviews with a lump of salt. He's not treated like the average Joe.

I remember him saying he spent $60,000+ on meals in a year

He throws out large figures like that all the time. Have no idea what he spends, but I'm sure it's got to be a pretty penny. I'm still not sure how he makes enough money doing what he does even with the advertisers, books and columns here and there. Maybe people pay a lot to subscribe to his website without the ads. I paid a dollar once and have gotten a gazillion emails to renew over the years, but he never changed the password and if I pull up his site, it auto goes to the subscription blog.

I like TF. I get his humor. I've been to one eat club and had a very nice time. Tom was a gentlemen during the meal. More cordial than most of the others members at my table. I even Poli-boarded him with a jab that I heard that he and Bill O'Reilly were going to do a cook show together on Fox and Friends. I got a small rise out of him but he did laugh it off. He hates anything Fox News, and probably my conservative guts too.

He may that very clear and added a political board to his food site, which wasn't a good idea. He really went wild arguing with people on there. Didn't do much for his book sales or subscriptions to his website I would think...He got into a belabored argument on U boats that went on for a long time and graduated to physical threats by at least one poster. It was ridiculous.

I believe this. He also brings quite a few bottles of his own wine to his eat club dinners.

But who cares really? It's his business to promote New Orleans food and restaurants. If he says something good about one of his sponsors is he the only one to do this? Everyone does it. If a vendor gives him a few bottles of wine and says "try these and take a few to an eat club" and he does is that a big deal? Or "hey Tom try this new appetizer I'm thinking about putting on the menu and tell me what you think." Is that bad?

I would do it and everyone elso would also. It is his job and he doesn't shy away from it.

Don't get me wrong, he can be a pretentious prick but I can guarantee this board is full of pretentious pricks calling him a pretentious prick.

I don't think a younger person could do it at his level but it's not to say someone shouldn't try. I think his medium is not looked favorably upon by younger generations. Radio isn't where young people want to be so I don't believe you will find someone to replace him. On social media certainly but not radio.

And what the hell, I like the roast beef poorboy voice of Tom Fitzmorris. He's gotten me interested in some restaurants over the years that I would have been hard pressed to find or know about before this internet thingy.

A Mandeville restaurant owner went to YouTube this month to respond to Tom's review of his restaurant.

I got an email from Fitzmorris out of the blue where he called me an a-hole and banned me from his forum. Had no idea what it was about. He wound up apologizing a few days later, saying he was having trouble on his board. It was shut down not long after.

He sells all his own advertising so naturally he has to pimp his places. Same as any other radio personality. He's never tried to be an anonymous critic. I think people need to just take him for what he is and enjoy.
