tomorrow i'll find it and post a pic so you can see what it looks like.
Ok Greg didn't get to it yesterday, but I found one. It wasn't for any 50th anniversary as I thought but for the session in which that 4 million fans had attended the CWS. Anyway here it is.

Thats pretty cool. Never seen one like it. Are you looking to get rid of it or something?

Back to the mural, though, I am not sure what I shall do with it now. Repainting it shall be a no go since I do not wish it to lose its originality. As for now it is rolled up in a safe place far away from the trash dump so it can be preserved and no longer damaged. Suggestions can be stated
Donate it to the Andonie museum.

Where was the other mural? And what was it of?
man, it's been so long ago. my guess at my recollection (sorry) is that the other one was on an opposite wall or at least close to the first one. of course i could be wrong but that room completely awed me, esp the first time i attended on of their dances. i just sat down, drank plenty and stared at the painting(s) for a very long time. baton rouge (in those days?) was a very cool town, esp for us hicks that came from a small town is southeast texas.

So keeping it in its current damaged shape is a better alternative?
Paintings are restored all the time. Granted, this one would have to be a bit more restored than usual, but restoring is always the better choice than making a replica of it.

Jack and I both agreed that to paint over it would ruin it. First the canvas might not support the mass amount of paint required since it has been exposed to constant rain and sun. You would have to repaint the entire mural in every detail. Also, it would no longer be original, it would be no better than just starting from scratch. It would be like taking an original 1920's Duesenberg that has become rusted and alittle in disrepair, and then slapping some bondo and fiberglass on it.
It just does not do it justice.
If someone wanted to make a replica of it, I woud not be opposed to it, but as far as restoring it, it just cant be done. I would rather it be in its original form than to be "all new".
Preservation is now my goal after advice from Jack.

That's almost as awesome as the guy who owned the old Southdowns Lounge. When he was 11, they were tearing down the sets of the old Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York, and he got a piece of a wall that had been signed by all 4 Beatles. He had a replica of it on display in the bar for years.

Old owner was a customer of my Dad's back in the day. I remember staying there as a kid the weekend Tulane beat us after we already had Orange Bowl locked up. Remember it was drizzling during that game and they turned off stadium lights before anyone got out. if I recall correctly, that game was also on the same day as crazy Stanford/Cal 10 lateral kickoff return game

You may be able to find a restoration company who might be able to make some improvement. You might want to speak with a book binding and restoration company. They may be able to clean dirt and mold. Some of these companies cleaned the books of official records damaged by the hurricanes. Look for a book binding company like Louisiana binding.

Olegreg -- I'm so glad you got the mural! I was afraid it was lost forever.
I have been going into the Bellemont the last two weekends in a row, and am going back tomorrow with Colleen from AbandonedBatonRouge. The other owner of the demo company, Charlie, took me on a tour on Mother's Day and we went looking for the mural and couldn't find it. There was a section that we couldn't get to because the roof was falling down and that sounds like exactly where it was. I have a suggestion for what to do with it:
The EBRP library has a Baton Rouge Collection on the 4th floor of the River Center branch, and they have a huuuge storage area full of old papers, magazines, city directories, scrapbooks, firemen's logs, and any other artifacts people want to donate for posterity's sake. Talk to Melissa Eastin and tell her Becky Ford sent you. She knows about what we're doing over at the Bellemont and I'm pretty sure she would be thrilled to have the mural!
I'm donating a large, old black and white photo that was in a rotten frame in the lobby, along with some other things that Pat and Charlie let me take. It has water and mold damage but she says they may be able to remove it. I don't know if they can fix the mural, but they would give it a loving, permanent home.
I did a huge set of pics that's up on Flickr if anyone is interested. Some of the places I took pics of on the 13th are already demolished. I was interviewed tonight by Rick Porche of WAFB about some of the historical research I've done on the hotel, along with just some general questions about what I thought about the state it was in, how cool it was at one time, etc.
He also told me that the Great Hall IS going to be demolished after all -- the original plan was to leave it. They're tossing around the idea of making it some kind of gated community. (Show of hands on who thinks that's a good idea??)
He also interviewed the Patrick and a couple who had worked at the hotel for about 15 years who were there yesterday sifting through the rubble, looking for some kind of mementos.

I have more to upload and Colleen will be making an update to ABR with hers after her trip into BR this weekend.
Again, kudos, olegreg! So glad that the mural is safe and sound (well, safe, anyway). ;)

redford- Do you have any originals of the mural in those slides you found? I wish I could see what it looked like when it was first completed.
I so wanted to go on a tour while I was there but after it took so long to take down the mural, I had prior engagements to attend to. Prolly wont ever get the chance again.

I wish! I don't think I do, at least, it wasn't the focal point in any of them (the best I can tell, without scanning them) -- it could have been in a background shot, though. Rick from WAFB has the slides right now to see if there's something he can use for his piece and then he's going to return them to me. Melissa at the library says she thinks she may be able to clean off the mold on some of the slides, too.
It was such a beautiful mural -- I wonder if something was written up on it when it was first displayed at the B...our pal Melissa would be the one to ask. I can get to the Advocate's archives at any of the EBRP libraries but she has this awesome master card catalog, yes, still on cards, that has other sources she has in her vast storehouse of a back office. Could be a reference card on Billy Cannon that would direct you to a magazine from back in the day talking about the mural or the artist.

I guess she is the lady to talk to. I really want to find out who had painted it and when.

Maybe you should ask Billy Cannon. He possibly knows something about it.

Great pictures, man! Must have been surreal to walk through it like that.
Please tell me somebody saved that beautiful chandelier
Also, how come nobody took all that booze once they closed? what a waste

it looks like it was still in bad shape four years ago, but a lot better shape that in your pic
can't believe they just left this stuff in there to rot

my step-father was the General Manager there from '59 - to '79-'80. I was telling him about this thread and he said he actually has a photo of him standing in front of the mural with Billy Cannon and Charlie McClendon. It makes him so sad to see the Bellemont in such a sad state.
