i am absolutely a traditionalist. there is no such thing as a vokda martini unless you mix gin and vermouth and then pour vodka in it.

run water over the martini glasses and place in freezer. pour gin (i like sapphire or plymouth)into shaker of ice. rotate wrist to stir the gin around (i am also against bruising the gin by shaking it with the ice). place shaker in freezer. after giving sufficient time to chill, remove glass, rim with lemon peel then twist and drop peel into glass. spritz with dry vermouth from atomizer. fill with gin.

perfection.

Agreed. I prefer mine stirred.

As long as it has very expensive vodka I'm cool with it.

COLD grey goose, COLD martini glass, little vermouth swirled in the glass & dumped, slightly dirty, rim the glass with lemon, serve on the rocks w/ a twist & 2 olives. Oh...shaken, not stirred.

I've switched to tequilla, ice, cap of dry vermouth, olive juice and an olive.

I find it odd that we call something with vodka in it a "martini" in the first place. What people call a vodka martini is pretty clearly its own drink, and it should have its own name.

"Martini" has come to mean virtually any adult beverage served very cold in a martini glass. That's just the way it is. When I bartended, I bet I would make 10 vodka martinis to one gin. And if a woman was drinking it, it was usallu very very dirty.

Concerning shaking vs stirring....I'd bet money nobody on this board could tell if a gin was 'bruised'. And shaking in a shaker filled to the top with ice is a great way to get the gin (or substitute) really really cold.

How does adding oxygen 'bruise' gin?

This is not to say that the martini is "better" or "more authentic" than a vodka martini (really, who cares about whether your booze is "authentic?") But it really is a different thing.

If I order a martini and they bring me vodka I'd be pissed. That's as bad as calling a sandwich served on a long bun a poboy or a big donut with sugar sprinkles a king cake. There is a fine line between the language evolving and the language degrading. Each preference is fine to the beholder, but don't muddy the water for the rest of us.

Does this ever happen? I assume the default is gin. I've never heard anyone order a "gin martini" but I've heard lots of people order "vodka martinis."

I'm so glad to find out this wasn't a thread about Martini the Tiger Droppings poster.

Ketel One, up and dirty, shaken, with olives, although a martini is not one of my drinks of choice.

I'm already taken.

And I take my martini the same way I take my single malt scotch. To the front porch to watch the sun go down and the soccer moms race walk.

Or to watch my wife cut the grass.

I was about to say the same thing....The ice fragments may give away that its shaken, but I seriously doubt anyone can taste if their gin is 'bruised'...

I'll take that bet. When I worked at the Chimes, we had a bar meeting one Sat AM where Doug mixed the two and asked us which one we liked better.

The one that tased like metal was the one that was bruised

So if you use a pilsner glass, with a small solo cup (10 oz I think) on the end, you can shake gin properly this way without bruising it.

I like vodka martinis too.

But somebody gave us some crap about how real martinis were poured with gin, blah, blah blah.

Churchill said this, Churchill said that.

I tried a few with Beefeaters one night with the mrs., and she fell asleep at the dining room table. It was great. 3 hours of peace and quiet.
