i agree that they should work the rest of the season. they agreed at the beginning of the season that they will work for this pay rate.
After doing some research, this isn't really true. Officials list themselves as available or unavailable on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis, much like substitute teachers. This isn't a strike in the traditional sense; the officials are simply listing themselves as "unavailable" for work.

There is no yearly agreement.

It doesn't mention it in the article, but from what I've been hearing it's not just pay. It's forcing them to buy all new uniforms from a certain distributer that is the most expensive, having to attend more workshops, etc etc. Basically there are more factors here than just pay.

IMO the uniform thing is a non-issue. They don't have to be replaced until 2012 and if you even halfway take care of your gear you should be replacing it by then anyhow.

I can't speak for basketball, but in football, many people will end up spending more for a rquired camp or clinic than what they will get out of the deal in the raise. There is something wrong about that.

this is true. the principals want better officials. officials are agreeing to start making it mandatory to attend yearly clinics, which can get costly when you add in the registration fees, hotel, and food.

but to do this, the officials would like to get more than the little they get now. i think the article said it would have cost bastrop $250 more in football fees this year for a 5 man crew that was all certified. it's not that much.....

i think the principals got upset when there was a mention of a possible strike, and they said to hell with them.

sounds like they want an improvement that is free of cost. Good luck with that, Beldings.

Under the proposal, additional clinics would be required at least every other year, and I can guarantee you that when you throw in all the costs you said, plus travel costs and the time away from work, the whole ting is BS anyhow.

In football for the regular season I would make an additional $100 per year. I can promise you I would spend more than that on the proposed clinics.

There are some really bad officials.

There are a decent amount of good ones too. But mostly the quality of officials in Baton Rouge is really bad.

When playoffs roll around other areas are always pissed when they get BR officials sent to their games.

If basketball = football, they are the worst I've ever seen. These are the guys that reffed the WM-Barbe game this year with 29 flags going against WM.

Uhigh at Episcopal tomorrow night "postponed"

Correct.

And if they can't get officials at this game, that means a lot of other games, if not all of them, will be postponed as well.

And FWIW, I am hearing that the Uhigh/Episcopal game could potentially be made-up Thursday. So either the refs that aren't listing themselves as "unavailable" are doing all the games over a spread-out period of time, or the strike worked and got the attention of the LHSAA and school principals pretty quickly.

I don't know about football. Didn't have a football team at my school and have only been to a handful of high school games in my life. But I do watch a lot of games and I did hear about that game.

I think this will be resolved pretty quickly. They are going to get their raise.

What calls, specifically, did you have an issue with?

Of thise 29 flags, how many were for lack of discipline like false starts and encroachment?

I know for sure of at least one game that is still on.
