Could the schools personally pay these guys just to keep the games going?

The schools do pay for the officials' fees. Each official is paid that night from the respective school he/she worked at that night....

Just a FYI

agree 100%... just because your not getting the pay you think you should your gonna call it quits in the middle of the season and possibly ruin many teams chances at a state title and also ruin the only chance many kids would have had at a college education? extremely selfish imo.

Louisiana is currently 50th in how much they pay basketball officials.
and we're probably around 50th in cost of living right?

from what i understand, the principals have to vote on the raise. the LHSAA certifies the officials, but schools pay them.

the reason it is coming in the middle of the basketball season is because this is when the principals have their meeting.

i know a couple of basketball officials, and they are always having to study rules and attend meetings. it isn't just showing up at a game with a striped shirt.

How would it blow up in their face? Serious question.

Who are we to tell someone else when they should and should not decide what's best for them? If you offer a service, and those who want the service are not willing to pay you what suits you, you don't provide the service.

i agree that they should work the rest of the season. they agreed at the beginning of the season that they will work for this pay rate. the new rate wouldn't come into effect till the summer anyways. let the football officials be the first to strike, if that is what they want to do.

And they're agreeing many months in advance that they'll work next season for $8 more a game.

Being a basketball ref isn't a year round job. It's a seasonal profession, in which the season has already started. If you agreed to start the season at a certain pay rate then you finish the season. I would have zero problems with them not starting next season if they didn't get the pay raise they felt they deserved.

The obstacle there is that the principals meet and vote this time of year.

If the officials said, "We'll finish this year but we're not working next year until we get what we deserve," then the basketball season would roll around, and the principals would blame the officials for walking out on them three months before their next vote.

Either way, the officials are going to look bad to those who follow the issue casually.

The officials have a better chance at getting what they demand by striking now rather than in November, so obviously walking out now is the best choice for them, no matter what our opinions are.

And if the rest of the season isn't canceled here, and if we lose say, a week, I don't think that's the end of the world; we'll all get over it by season's end.

If they walk out now, the season will probably resume before the playoffs start in a couple weeks (just my guess, but I strongly suspect this).
If they walk out in November, basketball likely doesn't resume until this time next year, screwing almost the whole season.

Trust me--if they had waited until next season to strike, we'd all be saying, "Couldn't you have done that back in January when we could have really done something about it?"

Complain about what? The shitty wage? Why not.

Basically it boils down to making less than minimum wage to wark these ballgames.

How much does Georgia pay for football and basketball?

fwiw, NYC pays $75. I know the value of a dollar isn't much here, though.

i support a strike. why shouldn't our refs make the national average?

I can tell you basketball is 50th out of 50 for pay.

In football we are in the bottom 50%.
