But they do wear their LHSAA patches to the game. I guess you are right though as that side money wouldn't have anything to do with their dispute with the LHSAA
Most referees ref on the side of their real job. So all of their refereeing money is "side money"

They could play the "come be a ref and help so the kids don't miss out on their only shot at HS bball" card.

I knew that I meant aside from their high school games

I get that, that was why I asked what is required.

Damn. This will be interesting.
Could the schools personally pay these guys just to keep the games going? Obviously it's probably only be the bigger schools such as 5A, and the richer schools like Catholic High and Episcopal, but there has to be some way to keep these guys going. I'm sure they would work if the schools pay them what they're asking for until something is resolved.

If a few certain refs (whose names I won't mention) are qualified to do it, then it can't be that hard.

I coached some middle school ball and I sure acted and treated the refs like their job was easy and they weren't doing it well.
But I would be willing be willing to do it to keep the games going, and I would imagine there are plenty of others who would step up

Damn. You must either go to a ton of games, or there are very few refs to go around.

Not gonna say.
There are some really bad officials.
There are a decent amount of good ones too. But mostly the quality of officials in Baton Rouge is really bad.
When playoffs roll around other areas are always pissed when they get BR officials sent to their games.

shite I would do it to keep the games going. It would really be unfair if I got to experience high school basketball all the way till the end, while the seniors this year had a bunch of important games cancelled.

Baton Rouge has some rough ones....but they are still better than Hammond...Hammond has a grand total of one good ref.

Not to mention the LHSAA would frown upon schools that tried that
Posted on 1/31/11 at 12:47 am to xiv
Can they really complain when most just ref on the side?
Posted on 1/31/11 at 5:46 am to The Boat
good for the refs... just like the prinicipals buy new uniforms and redo the court, they shouldn't worry about paying for the refs...
what kind of raise were we talking here? couldn't have been very much

I've been refereeing HS football and basketball in Georgia for 10 years. $31 for a basketball, and $75 for a football game is terrible.
Posted on 1/31/11 at 6:50 am to USMC DAWG
if it's so terrible then they should stop agreeing to do the job BEFORE the season starts
quitting in the middle is bush league bullshite and should lead to the termination of every ref
