Is Miles a bad coach?

I don't think so. I certainly don't think he is any worse than the year he won a NC. And when a coach wins a NC, you can't really complain about anything.
Yes, Miles is ultimately responsible for the program, but when a program looses it's OC and DC, and unexpectantly it's very talented and most experienced QB, yes, it may take time to right the ship.
Look at USC after it lost it's OC and DC. Did anyone say after this year that Carroll is now a bad coach? No.
As I said, Miles is ultimately responsible for the program and the coaches he hires, but with key player and coach defections, sometimes it may take some time to get the ship righted again.
I think he has ultimately done this with the defense, and is trying to do it with the offense, within the constraints of the existing contacts he has in place.
My opinion is that he will eventually get the coaching staff and the W-L record back to where it needs to be. Could he have done it without a dip in the W-L record, sure, but that is easier said than done sometimes. Ask Pete Carroll.
Bottom line, I think Miles knows how to recruit and manage a program, he just needs to get his staff right after some major defections, and I think his character and his knowledge will allow him to do that.

No. Look at how he turned around the defense in one year. I'm not sure I've seen such a turn around in a while. He knows how to recruit, he keeps alot of great Louisiana talent in state. He's very loyal and a great mentor to young kids.

bad? no

If he turns the Offense around next year I'll forever shut up about questioning Miles' competency.
We could have won every one of our losses if our defense was there, and that should show something to Miles right now.
But he's not a great coach, yet.

I think he's an above average coach when you take everything into account (recruiting, putting a staff together, ect ect...) the only problem with this is he's getting paid ELITE money to be just barley above average.

He IS a good coach IMO. He has made some dumb mistakes - but he's a good coach.
All I need to keep that opinion is to look at him beating Bob Stoops 2X in 3 years while at OSU -- with far less recruiting might and talent -- Mack Brown and UT with all their National Recruiting championships could not do it -- not even ONCE when OU and Bob Stoops were on top of the heap.
We have a good coach - and there is NOT ONE (not even Alabama) program I'd rather be at this moment.
Sure, I'd trade our situation for the NC this year -- but it's going to change again and when I look at:
UT -- no coach and no staff - 3 weeks before national signing day
UF -- maybe we have Urban, maybe we don't?
UK -- old coach retired... who do THEY get?
UGA -- embattled coach, no DC - annual underperforming team for 3 - 5 years
OM -- Nutt will settle in to Ark-type mediocrity
ARK -- Petrino may leave for someplace better for recruiting in the next few years -- perinnial SECW 2nd or 3rd finisher
MSU -- dammed if the DO - dammed if they DON'T -- if Mullens wins -- he'll leave for a better recruiting situation and $$ -- if he doesn't win -- they still suck
UT -- Lane f'ing Kiffen --- 'nough said
AU -- is Chiz really going to right the ship? they have not WON the SECW is how many years????
As I said -- LSU and Les Miles are not on top today and are not perfect -- but there is no situation I'd rather have when I look around the SEC and college football in general. We are NOT that far out... a break here and there and a better decision here and there and WE are in the hunt until the very end.

miles could return to being a great coach when meyer and saban both retire. that's his biggest problem.

Honestly, Coach Miles is an above average coach with some notable flaws. He doesn't seem to be as detail oriented as the two coaches that everyone on this board seems to worship, and he appears too stubborn and reluctant to change--even when it's obvious that changes should be made.
Both of his flaws are fixable. All in all, he's a good coach who will probably keep our team in the hunt for national titles on a regular basis. He's also shown a lot of class and loyalty to this team and his players.
The answer is "he's good enough". He can get better. And he's the right coach for us right now.

He damn sure can't manage a game, can he? And I'm not sure he CAN manage a program. He's the one that named the co-DC's, and he's the one sticking with Crowton. BTW, Chavis is the one that turned the defense around, not Miles.
I will say the guy is a great recruiter, and seems to be loyal to the University, but thats all the positives I have for him.

Jesus H. Christ, how long is ONE MOTHER frickING PLAYER going to be Miles' excuse for destroying this program?

Coordinators leave jobs all the time. It doesn't mean that side of the ball becomes completely useless, except when Les Miles is in charge of replacing them. Malveto was a stupid, ridiculous, terrible idea. Everyone knew it at the time except for Les Miles. And as for Crowton, I don't know what in the hell is going on with that. The offense sucks worse than it ever has in our history, and that can't be all Ryan Perrilloux's fault. And while we're at it, let's consider that...the last two seasons of LSU football have featured the worst defense in school history and the worst offense in school history. Somebody is not doing a very good job of hiring coordinators. Whoever that is should be fired, and sure as hell should not be making $4 million a year.

Three years? Saban built a whole fricking national championship team from scratch in three years. Miles can't replace one fricking quarterback or one defensive coordinator?

It's just as easy to call a god damned timeout to keep 20 crucial seconds from running off the clock as it is to SAY you need to call one. The ridiculous clock mismanagement issues that have CONTINUOUSLY plagued LSU under Les Miles are inexcusable and are COSTING US GAMES. The guy is a fricking moron.

He's the most bad M/F LSU has ever had as a HC if go by his 5 yr won-loss record.
He still has to get me another west title, at least, in the next yr or two for the money LSU is paying him. imo

I consider Miles to be an average coach at best. His overall record says otherwise, but I believe this is due more to him being in the right place at the right time.
The 2006 team may be the most talented LSU team ever assembled. There were 6 first rounders on that team, 3 of whom went in the top 6 in the draft. Jamarcus Russell, Laron Landry, Dwayne Bowe, Craig Davis, Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson. The 2007 team was also very talented and loaded with Senior leadership.
Now that the current roster is filled with Les' guys and Les' coaches, the results aren't so good anymore are they?
The bloom is off the Les Miles rose, and it will only get worse.

Yes and if you look closely we all have them. As far as I can remember Les had never lost to a three score underdog, something Pete Carroll has done half a dozen times. He also did not bolt from the program to his dreamjob when he had the chance, something Nick Saban can't say. We could do a lot worse,(Can you say Charlie Weiss?)Let's hope for an offensive explosion next season instead of hoping for more mistakes which by the way probably would not cost Les his job next season anyway if he does have a contender for #1 recruiting class.(Which he will.)

Miles is a pretty good coach in the functions of recruiting, running a classy program, team discipline, and players playing hard in games.
He is a terrible coach in the functions of in-game management, clock management, wasting timeouts that will be needed later, and no offense. Every one of these are correctable. But will they be?
