Number of credit cards matters but would consider thinking in aggregate about your credit, not just number of credit cards.

For example:

Available credit
Credit usage (as percentage of full capacity)
Age of accounts

Most importantly, having a budget and spending below your means. Using credit cards on budgeted items, that you payoff monthly while enjoying credit card incentives, and does not allow the CC companies to charge you insane interest will create large financial value for you / not destroy financial value for you.

He may be looking at one of the alternative scores. Just as an example, BofA uses the traditional model which tops out at 850, while Citi uses an alternative model which tops out at 900.

Really depends on you as far as how many.

I do cards that maximize my cash back at places I usually spend money. But we don't travel a ton. Usually one vacation a year that usually doesn't involve flying.

If you travel a decent amount, Chase has a pretty good rewards program if you get a couple of their cards and can just put all your points towards getting cheaper trips. They won't earn you as much as some cash back cards straight up, but the points can be redeemed for more if put towards travel and you book through their portal. This route will require you to get a card with a annual fee though. So need to consider that.

If you are more like me, then you may want to look at cards that will maximize your cash back. But that's gonna depend on where you shop some, etc.

Some I have .. (all no annual fee)

Citibank double cash - that gives me 2% back everywhere. It's my main card I use purchases where I don't have a card that gives me a higher %.

Citi Custom Cash - Gives me 5% back on whatever eligible category I spend the most in up to 500 a month. I use it for my gas card.

Cap one walmart card - 5% back on walmart pickup orders.

Lowes - 5% off on lowes purchases.

Altitude Go Visa - 4% back on dining

And a wells fargo autograph - 3% back on travel.

I would look at what you spend the most on and how much in normal rewards categories (dining, travel, gas, grocery (this doesn't include walamart, sams, etc), entertainment, etc) and go from there.

Some tips.

Request a credit increase every 6 months on your cards. That will raise your limit and help keep your utilization low. Pay in full on time, obviously. Try to keep utilization under 10%

Good luck.

There’s an Amazon card that gives 5% back. Otherwise it’ll probably be 1-2% max for online purchases with another card.

Groceries depends on where you shop. Amex Blue Cash has 6% back but excludes Walmart, Sams, Costco.

I only have 1 primary/daily driver (Chase Sapphire) for all the points and rewards.

The other two I only put 1 small charge a month on and pay the card balance down to $10 (if the charge is even over $10) as soon as it posts. I keep that $10 balance running through end of statement period then pay it off. Rinse and repeat. If you have cards that aren't your primary, you still want to show "responsible activity" on them, even if it's only a pack of gum a month.

You always want to keep your balances less than 20% of your limit for optimal "responsible activity" to keep your score up. If you have a big expense, pay it down/off as soon as you can. Credit card companies don't report to the bureaus when your statement periods are over, they have their own reporting schedules. Some every 45 days or so, some more frequent.

I've been doing this for many years and have a credit score over 800.

5.

Use 4 regularly (Chase trifecta + Chase business card) since they all earn bonus chase rewards points on different categories and I can move all of those points to my Chase Reserve card each month for the higher conversion rate.

So I'm firmly entrenched in the Chase family of cards.

I have:

AmEx Platinum
AmEx Hilton Aspire
AmEx Delta Platinum
AmEx Business Hilton Surpass
AmEx Blue Business Plus
AmEx Everyday Preferred (Want to cancel this but they keep giving me retention offers)
Chase Sapphire Preferred
Chase Ink Cash

My wife has:

AmEx Platinum
AmEx Gold
AmEx Hilton Aspire
AmEx Hilton Surpass
AmEx Delta Platinum
AmEx Delta Blue (Will probably end up cancelling this card unless I get a quality upgrade offer soon)
AmEx Blue Business Cash (Will probably cancel this card soon)
Citi Diamond Preferred

For us, traveling makes recouping the value fairly easy.

The Hilton Aspire comes with an annual free night certificate (We are currently redeeming at the Grand Wailea - $1k/night resort in Maui) and a $250 flight credit (Can use this for flights if you know how to game flight purchases)

The Hilton Surpass earn a free night certificate with $15,000 spend annually.

The Delta Platinum allows for free bag check and an annual companion certificate.

The Platinum has a slew of travel benefits/awards, but the $695 annual fee is steep. They give a $240/year entertainment subscription credit and a $240/year Uber credit, so that helps.

The AmEx Gold offering 4* Membership Rewards for dining and groceries make that our most used card unless working on sign up bonuses or annual spend

This is not correct. Should utilize the All Zero Except One approach to maximize credit score, and it's best to have a charge card reporting as that one with a balance as it will still show as 0% utilization

I've got a few, some for specific use and a couple for general:

-Chase Amazon: 5% back on Amazon purchases
-Citi CostCo: 4% back on gas, don't use it in store
-Amex Delta Reserve: primary card till I hit MQM bonus; extended warranty protection
-Fidelity Visa: 2% cash back, second primary, use inside CostCo
-Amex Everyday: use it to hold my Amex MR points

I will get other cards for sign up bonuses but don't hold them long term (i.e. Amex Plat)

I have more than I need but I get new ones for the cash back features. Rewards are too complicated and rarely are worth 2%.

My go to right now is a Wells Fargo 2% cash back but I recently got a PayPal 2% cash back that gives 3% when using paypal to pay which I find myself doing online to save the time entering my shipping info.

I too have the Chase Amazon 5% card and I don't even know where it is. I just have it set up to handle all my Amazon purchases. I have never used it for anything but Amazon purchases.

The only reward card I use is Chase Southwest Airlines and use it primarily for Southwest purchases BUT it does not have foreign transaction fees so I use it if I am traveling out of the country or making purchases out of the country.

I have a Cabelas card I got probably 20 years ago when I went in to buy a gun and they gave me an instant store credit for like $100 if I signed up for a card. I don't know when I last used it.

None of my cards have annual fees and all are set up to draft the entire statement amount every month. I have not carried a balance from month to month in over 30 years I suspect.

About 16. It’s ever evolving. Majority are kept only one year.

Churn and burn.

It has like a 45k limit so I can't imagine ever using close to that. I'm not willing to carry a bunch of cards just to try to maximize rewards. Seems like a headache to keep up with.

This is me. I dont find myself extraordinary, but pretty average. And on average, these cards are making money on people even though the users all say they pay em all off on time and get rewards. I have had one card for about 20 years. We use it for Christmas to keep gift buying secret from each other and also for me to buy high price things when I am not sure what is in our checking account. My wife handles all household finances, so I rarely have any real knowledge of what is going on.

As far as credit scores, we are over 800 and have always gotten great rates for mortgages and such, so I see no need in worrying about any of that.

LOL

Reserve was cut in January.
Platinum will likely be cut in July.
Amex Gold is $250.

Amex Platinum in my opinion pays for itself.

Depends on how much you spend and use digital services.

At 695 dollar annual fee you'd have to spend 14000 a year on hotels and flights just to break even if you aren't benefitting from the 240 credit for digital services.

Might make sense for you, but definitely doesn't for everybody.

I had no idea this was a thing. My wife loves Amazon even though we understand that it isnt always the best choice. 5% would be nice. May have to get it and use it for that solely.

Ya Amex Platinum is a big coupon book.

$240 pays for Disney bundle. Could also use it on Premium Peacock.

Walmart+ runs $155 for the year. Comes with Paramount Plus ad supported. Son crushes Paw Patrol

$200 from Uber which is easy for me to use.

$100 at Saks which is debatable because would you otherwise even shop there?

$189 from CLEAR which I don't use often since Precheck is fast enough but if shite hits the fan at security I have hope.

$200 airline credit can get some usage but would be nice if less restrictive or didn't need to use loopholes.

$200 hotel credit - I actually don't get much use because I'm usually not paying for the hotel anyway.

$300 Equinox is laughable.

Basically I'm right on the line with that one where it is in my wallet to escape disaster if I need it, get a lounge if not slammed or whatever. A few Amex offers a year usually put it in a net positive position.
