Germany Suggestions- Thinking Frankfurt/Rothenburg/Cologne

I'm thinking of just jetting on out to Frankfurt for five days and using the train from there. What area of town is best to stay?

I visited Cologne once while I was in Germany for a class but I only had a half day of sight seeing but cologne was nice to see. The cathedral there is amazing and a must see.

It's a trip that can be done...with Frankfurt being a solid base.
Cologne is a great town with a magnificent cathedral right outside the steps of the train station. Stop by Fruh am Dom afterwards for some solid food and great beer. There's a nice patio on a cozy square.
Rothenburg deserves an overnight stay, IMO...it's mostly tourists during the day, and you'll miss the Nightwatchman's Tour, which occurs each evening. Ideally, visit on Wednesday when the English Conversation Club at Altfrankische Weinstube occurs. A chat with Hermann the German is well worth the trip.....And that town square absent of the crowds with the moon shining down is a sight to see.
If you need hotel recs there, lemme know,

Any particular reason you choose Rothenburg? If you are only doing trains, Munich is less than 2 hours by train from Frankfurt. There's also Nuremburg or the wine country in the southwest.
I've only stayed overnight in Frankfurt near our offices, so I'm not good on where to stay for visiting.
The Altstadt is easy to get to the train station from.

Just loved the look of the town and the more I read the more I like it. I've got this idea in my head that it is the Oxford of Germany to some extent.

Oxford, Maine?
Oxford, England?
Mississippi?
Roth. is a nice town, but it is a bit touristy. When people come visit, I often bring them there... so it isn't a bad choice. But if I had only 5 days in Germany, it wouldn't be on my short list.

I could spend 5 days and never leave Munich. SO and I are thinking of flying into Munich and having her parents take the train down from the North and meet us for a few days either late summer or early fall. We are thinking one week in Munich and then another week in Berlin.

Dunson is certainly right about the tourists...I should have specified that IF you are going to Rothenburg that you should stay the night, as there are far fewer tourists still there in the evenings. Most day trip it in by bus/train.
