I've got an Nvidia Shield connected to our den TV as our main media driver.

For $50 I decided to give the Mi Box S a try and connected it to the TV in the bedroom. I've got to say it's a worthy Android TV device with built-in Chromecast and Google Assistant. I haven't tried to use it as a 4k streamer but it's fine at 720p and 1080p.

The remote feels cheap but has held up so far for six months.

That's how long I've owned it for too. Initially, it had an annoying frame rate issue after it woke up from stand-by. I had to Google why this happened and it turned out it was an easy fix. Messing with the HDMI CEC options solved it. I hope they fixed this issue since this isn't something most consumers would bother to look up.

My only real issue with the box is that so many app publishers neglect it due to the lack of popularity. For example, Hulu Live TV was limited to 30 fps, yet it does 60 fps on Roku. Using the Hulu Chromecast feature was also buggy as hell. The Fox Sports/FOXNOW apps also has a massive frame rate issue that hasn't been addressed for the longest time.

The remote is odd. It really does feel cheap as hell. The Netflix and Live TV buttons cannot be remapped, which sucks. On the bright side, the Bluetooth Low Energy seems to work as advertised. I'm still using the original batteries, which is impressive for a remote that has voice capabilities.

As far as 4K, I on the same boat as you; I haven't tried it. I don't have a 4k TV, but some reviews claim it just gets the job done. Nothing special about it.

I enjoy trying new Android boxes but the issues that I always notice which bother me the most, are the launchers on every Android box or stick other than the Shield, isn't worth the hassle once you get used to the Shields Leanback launcher.
Even changing the launcher on the Android boxes does not fix the UI issue and the hacked Leanback Launcher modified for Android boxes to mimic the Shield, is still too incomplete and amateurish to put up with.

Add to that that for whatever reason it seems most boxes have two USB ports but it seems the Android boxes struggle to have them both work simultaneously. In fact most times the second USB will not work when the first is occupied, even when using a powered or non-powered USB station.

The shield is too fast, sleek and fluid to not spend the extra couple dollars for, but it's fun to go through the different boxes and compare once a year.

IMO it's just not worth using in place of the Shield.

FYI - the Shield is having issues with 4K playback from Vudu, Fandango and Movies Anywhere since the latest update. If you have a 4K TV and UHD content on those services, it will only play HDX (HD).

Reddit Thread

Here's a Reddit thread with a ton of information on the Nvidia Shield 4K issues. It's encouraging to know what's sorta happening, but still no timeframe as to when or IF there will be a fix.

Yep, I read that a week or two back.

Doesn't affect me as I use none of those apps, I'm sure it'll be sorted soon.
Nvidia keeps up with sheild updates pretty well.
