Back in 2008-10 I used windows movie maker often, on a piece of shite computer. It was a wonderful program. Film shite on a camera. Bring in multiple files into a WMM project. Slice and dice, add audio, slice and dice that, it was very sophisticated for the time.

Today, computers are 100x more powerful, yet windows movie maker is now shittier.

Is there any free audio/video software editor out there that even resembles the Windows Movie Maker of 2009?

I'm not looking to make season 19 of Yellowstone. I just want a user-friendly version of what WMM used to be.

ETA- something familiar like audio editing programs protools and cubase, but for video. Expand out a timeline, hightlight a section, apply something to it, or delete it (not deleted, but clipped out and could be re-inserted later, like literal tape/film on the cutting room floor).

windows movie maker was "discontinued" or no longer supported after 2012, or so, so the version you remember back then is still the same. you can download via the Windows Essentials install from Microsoft.

if you want something that's a little bit more "sophisticated", i'd give Davinci Resolve a look. it's more like your Adobe Premiere type of program, but on free.
