Speaking today, Sir Alex Ferguson said: “I, like everyone in Scotland today, is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Billy McNeill. “He was a giant in Scottish Football, a man with an incredible presence and I'll always cherish the fact that we entered professional football at the same time. We played against each other on many occasions and, as anyone who played against him will testify, he was the fairest of players. “He was also a truly good man and will be a loss to everyone who knew him. Farewell Cesar.”

Former City manager Billy McNeill MBE, has sadly passed away aged 79. McNeill became City boss in June 1983 after leaving Celtic where he was considered a legend as both manager and player. His pedigree could hardly have been higher, but he arrived at Maine Road at a difficult time with the Blues still reeling for relegation from the top flight for the first time in 17 years. McNeill brought in David Phillips, Mick McCarthy, Neil McNab and Jim Melrose for the 1984–85 campaign and this time the Blues regained their top-flight status on the final day of the season with a 5-1win over Charlton Athletic in front of more than 47,000 fans at Maine Road.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola also joined the tributes to McNeill - who had a spell in charge of City between 1983 and 1986. "It is a sad day," Guardiola said.

Our thoughts are with @CelticFC and Billy McNeill's family at this sad time. A great opponent and captain in the 1967 European Cup final.
