RNK - TEAM (2018 SEC RECORD)
1 - Florida (20-10) will just reload and likely #1 again
2 - Ole Miss (18-12) slight step back
3 - Georgia (18-12) should be really good again/even better
4 - Arkansas (18-12) slight step back
5 - South Carolina (17-13) rebuilding year
6 - Vanderbilt (16-14) should be much improved
7 - Auburn (15-15) similar/about the same, maybe a tad worse
8 - LSU (15-15) will be MUCH better - faves to win the West probably
9 - Mississippi State (15-15) probably fairly big step back
10 - Kentucky (13-17) rebuilding year - shouldn't be that good (had 13 current players drafted - will lose at least 11 or so of them)
11 - Texas A&M (13-17) hard to say. Probably about the same/slightly better.
12 - Missouri (12-18) probably about the same/slightly worse
13 - Tennessee (12-18) should be a lot better
14 - Alabama (8-22) should be a few games better

Is there anything gayer than the #VandyBoys hashtag?

I legit hate Vanderbilt almost for that reason alone.
But plenty of other reasons too. Vandy sucks.

I went to the opening practice yesterday. Not much to report as they didn't do a whole lot and even if they had - it would still just be the first practice of the fall.
But I liked the temp of the practice. It was laid back but not lax.
If I had to gripe about something it would be that the coaches took some "cool" or historic numbers as if it matters what number the coaches wear (Bohannon #6, Jackson #15, Zulli #3) Of course Bennett is sporting is former #41. But that doesn't matter.
We'll probably suck this year on account of pitching (2-3 min of the 17 listed on the fall roster won't pitch this spring) and otherwise so many young arms.
We should score some runs. Offense should be pretty good. Defense should be a bit better than last year but hopefully a big step up at catcher. Malkin is a big kid behind the plate.
Watching BP, Malkin, Taylor and Cody Henry all dropped bombs. Hunter Alexander (who is huge - needs to drop a few lbs) also banged out a couple. Jett Manning looked to have a good spraying type swing. Breaux looks able to cover some ground.
If nothing else - this team will have a lot of versatility in terms of the lineup.

*****The following comments have nothing to do with performance, just observations or thoughts based on our personnel and how played vs. Fresno State and Florida State*****
* Clear that Raekwon Davis was either serving a bit of a "light suspension" vs. Florida State - or perhaps we just overused D Hand because we knew what we'd get from him as opposed to Buggs/Davis/Williams.
*Joshua Frazier's PT went back towards 2016 levels after he had a much bigger role vs. Florida State. Will be something to monitor in upcoming games
*Pay no real mind to gross snaps at LB vs. Fresno State as we too Shaun Dion Hamilton out of the game much earlier that usual on account of the score - but technically it was still 1st team out there sans him and maybe 1-2 others.
*With Evans out, we rotated Holcombe & Wilson every other series and seemed to usually let the one that hadn't been playing that series - come in at Mike on 3rd down Dime situations (a role that SDH has not played this year but probably would if he hadn't torn his ACL so late last year)
*It was almost 50/50 Jamey Mosley & Chris Allen at OLB since we didn't have A Jennings or R Evans (on 3rd downs). My assumption there is they are just going to watch tape these next few games and see which one (or perhaps both) we can count on to spell Jennings when he's back.
*Still early but barring further injuries - expect Dylan Moses to be simply a 3rd & long Dime pass rusher this year.
*At DB - it was interesting late in the 3rd Qtr we went back to the Nickel package we finished up last year with (sans Wallace for Humphrey) as Tony Brown got to play Star in Nickel and Fitzpatrick went to S with Hootie hitting the bench.
*Very likely nothing to it based on past year but odd how X. McKinney came in at S before Deionte Thompson did vs Fresno State.
---
On offense - for the first time I can ever recall we had 4 WR's on the field at the same time 9 different times (I think ONLY on 1st downs). There wasn't a TE. It was Ridley and the 3 freshman all 9 times, as well. I do not recall us ever having 4 WR's on the field at the same time under Saban - at least not that many times in "non Hail Mary situations assuming we've ever done a hail mary type play)
*Jedrick Wills spelled Matt Womack at RT for 2 full series in the 2nd quarter. Tells me that competition is close but perhaps not. No clue. Also, even though #13 was playing QB with #22 Harris at RB and the freshman at WR - for one series Josh Casher spelled Lester Cotton at RG with the other 4 starting OL's still in with the 1's.
It would be dumb, IMO, to overthink or look too much into our personnel vs Fresno State overall, but some interesting groupings we used.

Alabama/FSU Thoughts
Posted by Tom Haverford on 9/5/17 at 7:16 pm
First, FSU was as good of a Team as we'll face all year, specifically their defense. Not sure how good their OL was but otherwise an elite team we beat Saturday.
DEFENSE:
The amount of different LB groupings we used (even despite the injuries) was something we've never seen under Saban. For example before anyone was injured, Wilson & Holcombe replaced Evans & Hamilton the first series of the 2nd quarter - again something we've never done in the past - obviously we rotate Jack/Sam (OLB) all the time but we've never done it with ILB.
Then also us using Holcombe at Mike in Dime. Wonder if it's just new and he's better or we're trying to protect Hamilton coming off he knee injury? Probably the latter.
Here are the Defensive snaps played:
PLAYER (FIRST TEAM/2ND TEAM)
DL
Hand (55/0)
Payne (50/0)
Buggs (25/2)
Frazier (16/3)
QWilliams (10/1)
RDavis (5/0)
King (0/3)
I expect Davis + Williams will eat into some of Hand's snaps going forward - obviously he's not going to be able to play that many snaps every game. Frazier looked much more athletic. Payne is maybe the GOAT.
LB
Hamilton (43/0)
Evans (30/0)
Jennings (14/0)
Miller (25/0)
Lewis (31/0)
Holcombe (20/1)
Wilson (14/3)
Mosley (2/3)
MBrown (0/3)
Moses (7/2)
Obviously Lewis & Miller are gone for the year and that will great change things. Jennings out for a week or 3. So time for the young guys to step up/develop quickly. Clearly going to be an increased role for Moses by default (important to note pretty much all his snaps came after Jennings, Miller, Lewis & Evans were out.
But I figure when we're back healthy, 20, 32 & 33 will rarely leave the field except when/if 42 replaces 20 for Dime, 32 moves to outside rush and 33 will rotate in Nickel/Dime with 16, 8, 32 (dime) and then some of the likes of Mehki Brown and perhaps Ben Davis/Chris Allen.
We'll be fine but we really can't afford anymore seriously injuries here.
Secondary:
Fitzpatrick, Harrison, Averett (57/0)
Hootie (42/0)
Diggs (17/1)
Wallace (38/0)
TBrown (12/1)
Thompson (0/3)
Carter (0/1)
Mayden (0/3)
McKinney (0/3)
Not the best group we've had but possibly the most versatile with guys Fitzpatrick, Tony Brown, even Harrison able to play 2 or even 3 different positions. While Hootie is out, I'm guessing we move Tony back to Star in Nickel and leave Fitz at SS. In Dime, I figure Thompson fills Hootie's role OR I could see Thompson filling in for Hootie in Nickel AND Dime and leaving Fitz at Star and Tony in Dime only - we have so many options.
Diggs will get another shot to get his job back rest assured but Levi Wallace played pretty well Saturday and is legit. But it's important for next year we continue to bring Diggs along.
OFFENSE
Hard to really say a whole lot - we faced as good of a D as we'll see all year so it's expected to struggle at times. Some random comments:
I figure when Jacobs is back that Scarbrough will play much less but regardless I was shocked to see him on the field so much on 3rd down passing situations in lieu of Damien Harris who is much better all-around and esp blocking.
Hard to tell sometimes if FSU just had us covered up downfield (they are badass there especially #4 McFadden) or if Jalen bailed out of the pocket too quickly at times.
Hard to take away much from the OL after one game. But we need to give them more help in many situations. I counted at least 11 times we sent 5 guys on a route - most of those resulted in Jalen being pressured very quickly and/or having to throw it away. That will work against the likes of Kentucky and whatnot but not elite caliber teams like FSU. Jalen is awesome but he's not Tom Brady/Aaron Rodgers/Matthew Stafford.
We were in 11 personnel for 48 of our 60 plays. 12 in the remaining 12 plays. Not sure if that's matchup based but a lot less usage of TE's that what we've been used to under Kiffin - and we lack that "power" TE like a Brandon Greene and obviously no OJ Howard out there.
Clear we're going to have to give Matt Womack more help either from a TE/HB or the RB on obviously 3rd & long passing situations. In 3 watches so far, the few times I focused on Womack he looked serviceable in run blocking but he's gonna get beat 2-3 times a game on the pass rush. Which is fine, that happens unless it's the 2-3 plays that could be the difference in the game.

2018 Baseball
Posted by Tom Haverford on 7/31/17 at 7:13 pm
I'm working on a project trying to keep my spreadsheets as accurate as possible. Kind of hoping some fellow nerds can help me cross off or add some names to the following rosters as of right now.
*NOTE* Please don't reply if you just have a rumor that John Doe is leaving Ark because of playing time. Facts only - I realize not everything has a link so "inside" information is appreciated but "links" are the best. Basically no *speculation" i.e. James Doe sucks so he may transfer yada yada yada
Obviously by spring the official rosters have to basically 35 (with a few exceptions i.e. a new rule where players that won't play that season due to injury don't count against the 35)
I will post my stuff on the SEC East later but here is what I have for the SEC West.
(LSU has already posted a Fall 2017/Spring 2018 Roster on their site and I have pretty good sources on Alabama's so I'll still post them, but mainly looking for help from you:
Arkansas, Auburn, State, Ole Miss and Aggie fans right now.
Thanks.
AGAIN - please let me know if I'm missing a signee (esp JUCO transfer) or someone that for sure is no longer coming to your school in the fall

Pretty excited for the CWS Finals
Posted by Tom Haverford on 6/25/17 at 2:56 pm
I hope LSU wins but hope it goes to Game 3 just for dramatic purposes and to see Lange.
And kudos to CPM for holding Lange for a game that may not happen because he's never thrown on 3-day rest and does not want to jeopardize his career.
Also, it makes an All-SEC finals even better in that LSU & Florida didn't play in the regular season or even a game in Hoover.
Florida clearly with the major advantage in Game 1 with Brady Singer vs. Johnny Wholestaff but it's a three game series and LSU's offense is truly dynamic.
What is the status on Dalton Guthrie? Big loss for the Gators if he's out or not 100%. Dude can pick at SS.
But good luck to both teams but a bit more to the Tigers. Hope to see Alabama in this situation in the next 4-5 years under Coach Bohannon!

Just when you thought Kramer Robertson couldn't be more hateable

He goes and bleaches his hair blond.
***Edit*** I respect the dude's game but you'd think the way he carries himself he's Alex Bregman talent.

-19Early Look at Next Season
Posted by Tom Haverford on 6/20/17 at 11:40 am
Just a guess at how the SEC could shape out next season - this off the top of my head so please excuse any errors - this is meant to be a discussion primer not a published body of work.
1. Florida
Returns Singer, Kowar, Byrne, Dyson, India, Maldanado, Langworthy, Schwarz, etc. Florida is Florida. They as usual should have several impact freshmen.
2. Arkansas
Should return virtually everyone except Stephan and Spanberger. Expect huge improvement from the likes of Fletcher, McFarland, Koch, Knight – should have healthy Campbell and McKinney to replace Stephan/Alberius.
3. Mississippi State
Should get everyone back except Rooker & Gridley & Lovelady – including the 7+ injured players from this year plus incomers.
4. Louisiana State
Losing a lot from this team but will reload/replace – lineup should be awesome despite losing 4 starters s Bryce Jordan will be back + expected development of Watson, Smith and Slaughter. Add in Walker, Hess, Gilbert, Bush and some instant-impact arms and LSU should not experience a ton of drop-off.
5. Vanderbilt
Expect a ton of roster turnover/attrition but they’ll have, as usual, the nucleus to compete nationally and I think overall the East is going be very down.
6. Ole Miss
Returns virtually everyone – expect a lot of improvement from last year’s freshman class in year 2 i.e. the bats of guys like Johnson & Kessinger to compliment their elite gloves and the arms of the likes of Rolison, Roth, Ethridge, Holston + Stokes, Woolfork & company.
7. Auburn
Returns a good bit of their lineup and should have several impact bats and arms in their class to go along with the maturation/development of guys like Anthony, Davis, Johnson, Estes, Holland. You’ll still have Mize, Daniel, Coker, Mitchell plus the newcomers.
8. South Carolina
Returns a great deal of talent from a squad that was hit with injuries and bad luck – no coach right now but whoever takes over should have a fairly decent proverbial cupboard
9. Missouri
I think they seem pretty well coached an will be interesting to see what Beiser does in year 2 without Houck and a few others – some good talent that returns and will improve. Cornelius, Misner, Harris, Bartlett*, Sikkema, Plassmeyer, etc.
10. Kentucky
Will return Tristan Pompey (possible SEC POY), Sean Hjelle, Thompson, Becker, Machmacher and others but they simply lose too much to not take a pretty big step back next year- never mind who all is coming in – of course I could be wrong.
11. Texas A&M
Simply losing too much pitching to not have a down year, I’d expect – but they continue to prove me and plenty others wrong year-to-year. I fully expect Braden Shewmake to have a Soph slump – he has been way too hyped this year.
12. Alabama
No clue what the roster will look like come next spring but should have a good bit of players back – and nowhere to go but up – need a lot of pitching help but the offense should be pretty decent with the likes of Chandler Taylor and Cobie Vance leading the way. Could just much higher in year of Coach Bohannon if several JUCO pitchers such as Sam Gardner, Sage Diehm, Mason Duke get to campus and exceed expectations to compliment Walters, Vainer, Duarte, Medders returning. Sam Praytor behind the plate could be an x-factor as Alabama's catching defense was horrendous this past year.
13. Georgia
A lot of young talent but I’ll believe they can develop pitching when I see it – we’ll see if a new pitching coach helps.
14. Tennessee
They are going to suck

Yes "lol" at LSU - Man they "suck," playing in the CWS

vs. a team that's now 56-4 while all but 2 other SEC schools are home watching. Seriously like 10 threads on page 1 of their rival fans talking shite - unreal.
Guess I don't get it - I don't view all of Alabama's rivalries as Republicans vs. Democrats, Boston vs. New York, Cubs vs. Cardinals.
I realize most of them are (lame) trolls but sadly I think some people are serious. Ironic how in America most everyone hates a winner and wants to tear them down...
When an SEC power such as LSU loses a home super regional to something called "Stony Brook," you give their fans shite. When you're the #4 national seed in Omaha riding a 17-game win streak playing a team that's 55-4 from the Pac 10; I just don't see it as a shite-talking opportunity.
Esp if you're a fellow Bammer who hasn't been to Omaha since 1999. Or an Ole Miss fan.
I'm sure I'll get trashed for pandering or sucking up to a bunch of randos on a message board, but it's the truth. Does LSU have some obnoxious and annoying supporters? Of course but so does everyone.

2018 Alabama Baseball
Posted by Tom Haverford on 5/8/17 at 1:18 pm
Just to provide an idea of who's coming & go.
Right now we have 20 players signed/committed for next year and I expect them to add a couple more late JUCO signees or walk-ons, even between now and the fall.
Of those 20, at least 3 but up to 5 won't see campus - all HS kids. We might lose a JC transfer or two, but unlikely based on what all I've read and am privy to - but the MLB draft is weird and always tons of surprises.
1. Jacob Hearthely/LHP Cullman HS
2. Bubba Thompson/OF R/R McGill-Toolen HS
Neither will see campus both should be Top 50 overall draft picks
3. Sam Praytor/C R/R Helena HS
Very highly and nationally ranked catcher. Big bat. Not counting on him being at UA but he ends up here, he could be an instant-impact bat.
4. Chris Holcomb/LHP Cape Cod, MA
Originally committed to Goff as a member of the c/o of 2018 but relcassed and changed schools this semester to be eligible for the draft (and be in his correct grade). Typically, people do that for draft reasons. So I'm not expecting him to show up to Tuscaloosa.
5. Zach Hanna/OF L/L Shawnee, HS (Iowa Western JC)
6. Joe Breaux/OF L/L Tomball, TX (McLennan CC)
Both lefty corner outfielders - not sure if they can play CF but both have put up solid numbers in 2 years of elite level Juco ball. Either would be expected to step in and start Day 1 and hit at the top or the middle of the order. Listed together but I'm going to guess at least (maybe Breaux) signs pro.
7. Sam Gardner/RHP Shelbyville, TN (Walters St. CC)
Has had a fine season this year - could be instant impact guy if he gets to UA and I expect he will based on his size and scouting reports. Could be a weekend starter for us - though typically you don't want JUCO transfer as weekend starters - but rather filling holes in the back end of the bullpen...
8. Dylan Cyphert/LHP Cranberry, PA (Gulf Coast State)
9. Sage Diehm/LHP Nampa, ID (College of Southern Nevada) Both lefties from the JC ranks that were fairly highly rated prospects out of HS. Cyphert originally enrolled at Pittsburgh but quickly left whereas Diehm originally signed and enrolled at North Carolina. Cyphert appears to have solid stuff but command issues. Diehm has not pitched this year since opening day so I assume he could retain his Sophomore eligiblity status when he gets here. I could see Cyphert not making it to campus but Diehm is a pretty safe bet at this point.
10. DJ Petrinsky/C R/R Magnolia, TX (Hill College)
Newest addition to the class and haven't had much tim e to dig into him - but he's put up solid offensive numbers for Hill College as a Soph this year and his line translates to being a safe bet to transition to the SEC offensively, but one alarming stat especially considering our catcher play this past year, is that he's allowed 12 passed balls.
11. Jake Sims C/IF L/R Guelph, Ontario (Canda) Roane St CC
He's listed as a catcher but basically no chance he plays there in the SEC based on the fact he's barely played there at Roane but rather been a 1B/DH. Offensive numbers haven't been great for that position, either.
12. Whitt Davis 1B R/R Huntsville (East Mississippi CC)
Solid offensive numbers at EMCC but that's D2 Juco and it's hard to really project that to the SEC level. If he's able to contribute next year it will be a pleasant surprise.
13. Tyler Spring/RHP Wiggins, MS (Jones Co)
Another Mississippi JUCO kid - hasn't pitched this year but was big in their D2 JUCO National Championship in 2016. I assume he profiles as a mid-inning relief pitcher at best, possibly being a high-leverage guy.
14. John Shields/MIF Tampa, FL (Plant HS)
One of the few Gaspard committs that didn't bail (along with Heatherly, Myers & Praytor) and has been committed for a years. Very little information I've come across on him in terms of whether he can be an in-stant impact guy (positively)
15. Mitch Myers/RHP Opelika HS
Good college prospect
16. Brady Greene/RHP St. James HS - Montgomery
Could develop into a solid SEC starter.
***So much emphasis is placed on velo when they rank or project these kids---which is why so many great college players weren't highly rated but they show up to college, grown and develop and learn to throw strikes and usually get some velo bumps - but it annoys me personally how much emphasis scouts place solely on velo with these 17 year-old kids.
Also, they're ranked based on MLB projections - not college so important to keep that in mind. Not many 5'11" pitchers or 5'9" hitters are going to be highly rated out of HS - but look around the SEC at how many are Dominant.
17. Zach Harlan/RHP Daphne HS
Another in-state RHP with not much out on there on him.
18. Tyler Gentry/RHP-OF Arlington HS (TN)
Not sure what he was reruited as (or both) but could another diamnond-in-rough and a kid that develops into a solid player, but like the rest of the HS signees - probably not going to make waves Day 1.
19. Jared Shemper/LHP Germantown, TN (Christian Brothers)
Yeah - not much info on him, either.
20. Noah Fondren/3B Cullman HS
Could develop into a good college player in a couple years but probably would have been better off going JUCO and getting experience.
So there's the 20 and likely a couple more to come late...so at least 16+ new faces will be here for fall practice. And we're only going to lose a handful of SR/draftees so expect tons of roster turnover. I won't speculate on names but likely to not see many of the current freshmen here in the spring of 2018 as they'll go play JUCO.
And some (rising) SRs and JRs that aren't draft concerns - and not really worth transferring to D2 or sitting out - might just hang it up and not have to endure another year of Goff's program
SR's:
1) Tanner DeVinny
2) Nick Eicholtz
plus walk-ons/post-grads Mike Oczypok & Taylor Poe
Will lose to draft:
3) Garrett Suchey
4) Jake Walters
Probably lose to the draft
5) Chandler Taylor
6) Hunter Alexander
7) Chandler Avant
Could very well see us with a roster set-up much like Auburn from this year expect it won't have Casey Mize, Keegan Thompson or a bunch of facial hair and mullets.
