Posts for gate

Posted by Edwardo on 12/9/24 at 5:05 pm
I’m about to put up a new gate to my property to replace one that loggers messed up. I’ll be using 6x6 treated posts. My question is should I coat the below ground portion with anything? To bad they did away with cca treatments.

Painting concrete block wall

For you painters out there, what’s the process for prepping and painting an exterior concrete block wall? What’s some good paint brands to go with?

I have a farm in SE Alabama and have a well prepared site around an RV that I want to grow some grass. I have no well at the site so no irrigation. What is the best grass to sod in or plug in where the only water is from rainfall?

Bead board on studs

Posted by Edwardo on 2/18/22 at 7:39 pm
I’m thinking of using 3/16 bead board directly on studs in a basement bathroom. Home Depot’s instructions say not to as the panels are too thin without support between studs and panels. They say to use sheet rock behind it. And no nails; use glue. What do you guys think?

Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express

I’ve just rediscovered the awesomeness of Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express! Specifically their self titled first album. The first tract reminds me of Mahavishnu Orchestra and the second of Jeff Beck. I first listened to this album in the early 70s when riding around with a good friend who since died of brain cancer. Happy to find it again.

HVAC for basement

Posted by Edwardo on 4/22/21 at 9:24 am
I have a 520 square foot basement whose walls are concrete block. I plan to divide it into two bedrooms and using mini-splits for heating and cooling. It won’t need much since it never gets very hot nor very cold, but I’m concerned with high humidity. I’ve had five HVAC people come to give me quotes. Four quoted two 9000 btu inside heads with one 18000 btu outside unit. One guy says that 18000 is too much as it won’t run enough to pull the humidity out. He wants to use one 9000 single mini split in one bedroom with through- wall ventilators to force air into the adjoining bedroom along with a dehumidifier. I’m getting confused with all of this. What say you guys?

Furring strips on cinder block

Posted by Edwardo on 3/31/21 at 4:56 pm
I am planning to put either beadboard or shiplap over cinder block walls in our basement and need to put in furring strips first; will glue and screw them. Only about 12 inches of two walls are below grade; the other wall is above grade. I’ve been told by one carpenter to only use treated furring strips on cinder block and another who said only the below grade portion should have treated strips with the remainder non treated. Which one is correct? With the current price of lumber, I’m trying to safe where I can. If it makes any difference, the block walls are painted. Thanks!

WWII in China

Posted by Edwardo on 1/4/21 at 6:55 pm
Anyone have recommendations for a concise history of the war in China during WWII? I’ve read a lot of books on the Pacific and European fronts but none except The Rape of Nanking about the Chinese war.
We have camping reservations in those states beginning in Idaho in mid June, then to Glacier NP, then Yellowstone/Grand Tetons later in July. Does anyone know about restrictions relating to COVID-19? We will be in a travel trailer, mostly sight seeing and fly fishing. Thanks
