And the Iran deal won't be a fumble if it leads to further negotiations, in my view.

100% agree. I appreciate the "spirit" of the nuclear deal, even if it's actually just a really poorly written agreement that could make going to war very easy for the US. I'm also all about getting this 150 bil settlement done, because US claimants will finally be paid, and I think it will help show good faith. Of course, the overall US FP strategy in the region will need to shift dramatically towards one focused on trade for any of that to matter.

The liberalizing potential of Iran is much greater than other Muslim countries, and interaction through trade and wealth is a better way of undermining the Iranian government, which already has its discontents inside it, than it would be for more Americans to fight for vague interests against what would amount to the Shia world. Especially when Sunni Islamism has been a much bigger problem, and one that has globalizing potential, unlike the regional potential of Shia Islamism.

Yep. 100/100

Iranian government will have serious domestic pressure from the merchant /capitalist class with newfound access to western markets. Hopefully the working class benefit enough to be a force as well.

I think the fact that it looked like the US was "Paying ransom" was a huge bonus for Iran.

Agreed

Eventually, Iran will get about 50 billion of that money after US claimants take their share.
