To be clear, "shipping themselves" meant loading themselves into a can (like the hookers in "the wire") and then traveling as commodity overseas.

Im not disagreeing with you that they are there, just that I doubt they are stowing away on container vessels. As I said, some ss lines will allow for passengers. Traveling like a merchant marine across the Atlantic sounds miserable to me, but probably is better than living in Africa.
