Dead man walking.
And I doubt a phoenix type situation is in the offing.
The country is basically made up of two halves which hate each other, and interestingly, only one side is interested in a peaceful divorce.

What does the country need to improve on?
I associate improvement to an inference of current acceptability that we simply want to better.
The US has deteriorated far beyond a baseline of acceptability. We are now living under the realities of the world view the left overtly stated they wanted to achieve in fundamentally changing America under Obama. For a large number of whites comprising a little less than 50% of the voting population, these realities are and will remain unacceptable.
What are we excelling at?
“We” collectively aren’t excelling at anything. The left is winning - no doubt - as a nation there is no evidence of excelling when the compromised political leadership serves it owners and not its tax paying citizens.
Where do we go from here?
A painful march (perhaps accelerated) on the road to further state control, increased taxation, diluted borders, etc.
