child separation issue clarification

Pre trump:
Adult and kid (could be related or could be trafficked) show up to non port entry part of boarder and get caught. They claim asylum and are released into the US together after 20 days of being separated.
Trump: Same situation but the adult is not released into the US after the 20 days because he is held as a criminal until proven otherwise.
Is this correct?
In both cases the kid makes it in if the adult claims asylum and they are caught at a non port area of the border? In the pre trump era this seems like a way of incentivising child trafficking. I mean thats a huge loophole there.
In the trump era the situation is checked out more thoroughly and if the adult passes mustard then they get in eventually but not at 20 days. The kid makes it in regardless. If it is found not to be a family asylum case the adult is sent back.
If anything this seems too generous! Catch them not at a port and they should all be turned away together. Releasing them into our country without fully understanding what the situation is seems crazy.
Am I understanding this or what am I missing
