Trailer is 11 years old. Had some lighting issues recently - right sided brake/blinker light would not work but everything else would. Checked all grounds, attached a new connector and reworked some old splice locations. Now all I've got is running lights and no blinker/brake on either side.

I decided I just want to rewire the whole trailer. It's got plenty of rusty spots in the wiring. Easy enough for most but this one has a detachable tongue and I'm not sure about that connection.

This is the end of the detachable tongue where it connects to the trailer. What is this connection called? And should I try to replace it too while I'm doing everything else? Should I just abandon ship?

Cut that awful thing off and replace it with a standard flat plug.

Is that an RV 7 pin plug?

I don't know. The wiring goes through the tubing style tongue - which I'd like to retain it's ability to detach. That is where the tongue base meets the trailer. THe attachment to my SUV is a standard flat-4 connector

The only removable tongue trailer I ever had just had a weather grommet on the bottom with a 4 pin on each piece. You slid the tongue together, put in the retaining pin, and connected the the two 4 pins on the outside of the square tube.

That picture looks like an RV plug. Which doesn't make sense. If you slide the tongue into the square tube on the trailer that connection will have some deflection since the two pieces do not fit together tightly.

You can probably clean it up but for simplicity sake I would probably just replace it with a different style plug. Preferably whatever your vehicle uses so you have two spares in case you have a plug failure at the coupler or vehicle.

Yeah. Rv 7 pin.

Could get by with 5 or 4 pin depending if you have brakes. While you are doing it, upgrade your wire and run a ground the entire way.

I think I'm gonna do it like Barf was saying. Seems like that would be pretty easy.

Can you explain the addition of a ground wire? Assuming I just buy a standard trailer rewiring 4 pin kit how/what would I do to run additional ground wire?

Don't buy a complete wire kit. Buy your lights and connectors. For the wire buy an underground rated 3 conductor wire. Make sure you seal up and use the correct connectors and splices. You will have far less future issues if you run the ground rather than use the trailer. Especially if a steel trailer.

The wire in the kits for trailer lights is pretty shitty, usually only has a few strands and rusts/breaks internally very easy.

If you are rewiring get some direct bury cable and get to soldering.
