For a trolling motor, buy a gel-cell if you can. May cost a bit more...but it'll last longer and work better than comparable lead-acid batteries.

What batteries are the lightest? That would probably be his best bet since it's a yak

Ahhh...didn't know that. Thought it was for a smallish boat. In that case, gel-cells are definitely the heaviest. Lead-acid or AGM would be lighter, though probably not by much. Depends on what group size he gets. Could probably find a group size 24 Gel-cell that would be lighter and last longer than a group size 27 lead-acid. You find specs on all the batteries online fairly easily.

In all honesty if it was me I'd go get the lightest walmart deep cycle I could find. You won't run it down in one outing with that small motor on a yak.
And then get one of these to put it in, so you don't connect the poles with a net handle or something, or rip a wire off, and keep it dry
