Travis Haley put up the video below on his YouTube channel last year, and if I'm blessed with at least a few more years of life I WILL do this.

From what I understand it's a pretty safe hobby and the equipment costs are similar to that of an ATV.

I didn't think there was much difference in the two...wing design, landing gear, etc?

No, but that would be cool too. I changed the title to hopefully avoid the confusion.

I have done para-planes for many years...basically a 3 wheel go cart with a prop on the back and a chute overhead.

Simply an amazing feeling. I've been up to 5000 on a clear calm evening and throttle down and just basically parachute down in the quiet. Speeds are constant, throttling up only increases height.

I'm so jealous.

I was thinking more about the powered parachute without the cart...like in the video. Are there any advantages to para-planes other than being able to have a passenger? They're probably faster as well?

Some guys do it here in the channel, between the mountains. Looks fun, but I've lost any edge I used to have that would allow me to do it.

I'm shocked that you, of all people, would say that! You're like my Outdoor Board hero, Roger!...except for the kayaking.

Yeah, they also do a lot of paragliding off the mountains but I've seen the wind do too man bad things to aircraft and paragliders. Just can't make myself do it. Would love to though. Looks like a blast.

The speed ddoesn't change. Mine flies 26 mph in dead calm. So if I'm going against a 10mph wind, I'm doing 16 mph relative to the ground. To go up, accelerate. To go down, decelerate. But the speed doesn't change. If I kill the engine, I will drop at 12 ft per second and be gliding at 26 mph so a complete engine failure isn't that big of a deal provided you have somewhere to set it down. The cart model is heavier which helps not being comple!tely !pushed around by the wind, more stable, if you will. I imagine some sort of parachuted allow faster speeds, but you would be giving up safety on a lot of areas. If u want more speed, I would thing upgrading to a rigid wing/ fixed wing would be the only way. Now as far as the mountain jumping or the motor strapped to your back, not for me.

To me paragliding looks like the most pure form of flight there is. You're hanging from the canopy in the midst nothing but air. The only bad part is that with no structure or wheels landings are riskier than if you were flying a power parachute or a trike.

The awesome part.

And the not so great...
