Looking for a good 3-6 day trip within a days drive of lafayette. I am considering buffalo river, big bend national park but am open to go a little further if it is worth it. I am open to any type of terrain or challenge so suggest away.

Doesn't have to be a boat trip like the two listed but i hear both are very beautiful for being this far south. I know Yellowstone is 23 hour drive but that's pushing it.

go up to the buffalo River. Was just there in September. Stayed at Wild Bill's Outfitters in Yellville. Plenty to do. Beautiful area.

Appalachian trail in north Georgia would be slightly further than the Buffalo River but closer than Big Bend. I love Big Bend but I'm not sure I'd want to backpack it. There is a lot more terrain to cover and the mountains are a lot higher in north GA than Arkansas. The Smokies in NC and TN are only a couple of hours further though GA would be fine.

Ouachita Trail, Ozark Highlands Trail, both in Arkansas, a little closer than Buffalo River.

Colorado is about a 24 hour drive so that technically would qualify... I gave up on this sort of thing in LA. I'd like to know some good spots as well. Asheville, NC aka Pisga National Forrest is about a 12 hour drive or so. I've done some hiking in that area, but no over night backpack trips.

Yea, if its something like buffalo river or big bend i will rent canoes and try to hike a little bit to see things off the river.

Id rather do a true backpacking trip because i like the challenge of a long hike and deciding on what to pack. I also want a reason to use my new Marmot Nusku tent. Being able to load up a canoe kind of takes the challenge out of it, though i still plan on doing both one day; id prefer something a little more adventurous.

Ive done some backpacking in great smoky national as well as plenty in Maryland, virginia and Penn. so i think id rather go west if i were going that far. I love the Appalachians but if you've seen one part it seems you've seen them all.

I'd rather backpack out west as well but you could reach the AT in north Georgia in something like 10 hours vs. probably 16 hours for the nearest western mountains that would be good for backpacking. Just depends on how much more you'd prefer to be out west.

There may actually be decent backpacking in north Alabama (east of Huntsville); it looked like good country for it when I drove through there.

Ft. Payne Alabama...Desoto State Park area is really nice. But there's just a lot more area in east TN and west NC. Looks similar and is a LOT closer in Ft. Payne area.
