I saw some guys walking up and down stairs at a high school football stadium with their backpacks on. They were training to hike down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Can't find any hills, do some stadiums with your pack.

I love my Merrels. I have ones that look like cross trsiners(cept they are brown and have decent tread on them). I wear them with decent hiking socks from REI and go on day hikes in them all the time.
OP....if you are just wanting to do day hikes you really do not need bulky, heavy hiking boots. I don't know any trails in BR and LA sadly...(.didn't get into hiking till after I left)

He was speaking my language.....hiking. I may post on here in a few months to get opinions on kayaks when we go buy them.
