You must be right. I just got of the phone with LDWF and was told that several people have called today to ask about this (I wonder why
), and the agent could find nothing in writing to say they're not illegal to use as bait.
I was always told (from my days at LDWF) that goldfish couldn't be used unless they're dead. I do know you can drop gold food coloring in a bucket of shiners to make them gold.

its not like it would thrive and start overpopulating. Its a goldfish, that shites getting eaten almost instantly.

You obviously didn’t check out the linked videos on the previous page.

No idea if it's legal or not, but why would you even want to risk introducing a non-native species into Louisiana's ecosystem?
you are right in principle, but a goldfish isnt some highly invasive critter
most highly invasive critters lack natural predators in the environment they are introduced into a goldfish ain't gonna last very long in the wild
and even if they do get out they aren't going to do a ton of ecological damage like a predatory invasive such as a snakehead fish would do
and I dont think gray crickets are native to the US or most the earthworms we use for bait
not even sure what actual species the shiners are that are sold at bait stores they may not be native either

quote:I strongly disagree. Nothing beats bream and the “golder” the gold fish, the less the flatheads like it, I’ve found.
But once you use gold fish you'll never go back to perch.

flat heads???? Aka spotted cat
Nope.
"Spotted cat" is a Channel Cat. They don't get nearly as large as Blues or Flatheads.
Read all about it.

What we/everyone in south central La call a spotted cat is definitely a flathead.

You can call your sister your girlfriend. I don't care.
Did you even read the link?

A flathead is a spotted cat, is a yellow cat, is an Opelousa cat...but a flathead is not a channel cat.

Since you seem to be so opinionated on the matter, would you care to entertain a friendly wager?
ETA: Please show me where I said a flathead is a channel cat.

I did.
What is commonly called a "spotted catfish" in the southeast U.S. is Ictalurus punctatus. The latin name actually means "spotted."
It is more widely referred to as a "channel cat."

What is commonly referred to as a "flathead" in the southeast U.S. is Pylodictis olivaris.
The two animals are not even of the same genus.
Just let me know if you would like to entertain a wager.
I will gladly enter into a ban bet with you.

Sorry but you're wrong. No one in Louisiana calls a channel cat a spotted cat cause a spotted cat is a flathead...period.

I will say that flatheads being called yellow cats and Ops is very common though.
Them being called spotted cats is wrong.
ETA: Do you wanna make a ban bet or not?

I would just use them and if you get checked just tell the game warden you read on Tigerdroppings that it should be OK. If he writes a ticket I would take this thread to the judge as evidence to get your charges dropped

Oh and he calls spotted catfish flatheads too.
