I realize that leasing from a timber company is the only option for some, but I would almost rather hunt public lands.

Like anything else, it’s all about your goals. If it was just about shooting a giant deer I wouldn’t even have a MS or LA license, I’d draw tags exclusively in the Midwest. If it was just about shooting anything legal for the lowest cost, I’d go public in MS. I enjoy hanging out with a select group of guys while we fool around in the woods and occasionally kill a deer we’re proud of, even if it means we don’t get to make every habitat decision.
