You’re not really testing the water, you’re testing the mud under the water. There are kits you can buy with directions, or the state ag extension will usually test it for you, but I can save you the trouble and just tell you to lime at 2 tons/acre now. There’s not much else a pond really needs, fertilizer is cheap and easy to apply, and the test for need is your own eyes.

Are there any fish/minnows living in the pond now?

New construction pond, or existing?

You can actually test your water for it's alkalinity. But this is a function of the soil pH.

If the alkalinity is between 25-30 you will get the benefit of adding fertilize. If it is around 15 you should probably add a ton of lime per acre.

I will go ahead and tell you it takes a lot of time and expense to properly manage a pond. You really need to keep logs of all the fish that are being taken out. A fertilized pond will produce a lot of fish that need to be removed.

Pond is about 10 years old. A couple of us are thinking of restocking it. The maintenance guys use pond dye in the pond. Bass are all about 1-2 lbs but very skinny. Not many minnows.

The first step is figuring out the water before, starting the process. Is the pond dye the problem? If so HOA is willing to use alternatives or stop it all together. Testing the water is the start.

We will release minnows and small crawfish and Bluegill etc.. But again before spending money, need this testing done.

I see a note mentioning Ag extension doing testing. How can I get in touch those guys. Pond has promise just need to be managed right... pond is in St. Tammnay Parish.

Just based off your comments, I would remove as many bass as possible before adding forage.
