I'm interested in trying this with a few heirlooms I've had trouble growing.

Let the suckers grow larger then cut them off and stick them in the ground. Use a little root hormone powder if you want.

I've done the sucker thing, but I'm talking about grafting 2 different varieties.

Knowing the little I do about why pecsntrees are grafted, I don't understand why you would want to graft tomato plants. What's the benefit?

You can grow disease resistant heirlooms

I thought most tomato diseases were airborne.

I admire your drive to improve something but not worth the trouble for an annual imo.

My Cherokee Purple and Brandywines never do well. I'm thinking of grafting with a Better Boy or Celebrity which are super easy.

I don't understand why you'd graft tomato plants. I keep a couple in pots that I can move if the ones in the beds aren't doing as well. My only issue with mine in the past has been the damn leaf miners killing all the leaves.
