Because, Jim-Bob, we’re not trying to send astronauts to collect a few moon rocks then come back home. Everything right now is about a LONG TERM presence in outer space, which is a completely different animal. The systems being developed right now need to work for possibly decades and will have to be adaptable to new technologies.
Sorry they didn’t teach these concepts in the middle school you probably dropped out of.
