I'm not a Truman apologist (although I am an admirer)
Why, because he gave all of Eastern Europe and half of Asia to Stalin? Keep in mind that Truman left office with the lowest approval ratings for a president ever--a mark that still stands today (yes, his approval ratings were even lower than Nixon had after Watergate).
This whole thread is full of fail, in fact. Stalin told Truman and Churchill that he needed 3 months to gather his soldiers together, and then he would join them in the Asian theater of the war. Sure enough, the Soviets invaded Manchuria exactly 3 months later, just like Stalin promised. All the people in this thread who keep saying that the Soviets joined in when they did because the U.S. used the A-bomb obviously skipped history class on the day of this topic. Also, the Japanese didn't fear the Bomb. They viewed it as a larger conventional weapon, not as the special device that everyone else viewed it as. That's why they didn't surrender after the first one was dropped. It was only after the Soviets joined in and were obviously going to take back the land lost to Japan in the Russo-Japanese war of 1905 (and any more that they could get their hands on) that they finally gave up.

No it was only after the second atomic bomb was dropped and they saw the actual destruction that they accepted unconditional surrender.

I still don't see why Japan and Russia would fight over port Arthur. It's a crappy place.
