Mel Bay is how I learned. Just kidding somewhat. I learned from my brother, but I really did use his books. I'd probably do YouTube now.

Baton Rouge has an Adult Music Club where they will teach you the instrument of your choice in person. It's called the Baton Rouge Adult Music Club. They are on Facebook

a lot of the old songs that are familiar, but might not be your favorite, are good practice songs because your brain has the memory of the chord changes, now your are just connecting the muscle memory of the brain to the hands/fingers

You want to go cheap, go to a pawnshop and buy an Alvarez, Takamine or best of all Yamaha guitar. Find one they want 150 and offer a hundred. You can leave cheap a guitar laying around so you pick them up more often if you don't have to dig them out of a case.
Get on line and learn the cowboy chords C,F,G,A,D and E. F will be the tough one. You will pick up minor and barre chords later
You can now play almost every song Jimmy Buffet ever wrote. Cheap guitars are great around the campfire or at a backyard BBQ.
Next will be cool ways to go from one chord to another. Hammer ons, walkups etc.
The sooner you can play along with a song the more fun you will have. It really won't take that long to
get that done. Have fun and don't be shy.

That is amazing, but I haven't lived there in over a decade now.

1. Get lessons
2. Practice (10 min a day is better than nothing)
3. Practice

6. Begin learning music theory (chord progressions, scales, etc)
I agree with this 1000%. Practice, practice, practice. Find a song that you would like to learn how to play. Work your way to that. And then another. Quickly you’ll find that it’s a passion that you cannot shake. Welcome to the life.

Learn the basic cowboy chords yourself. You’d be surprised how quickly you can strum along to song especially with the help of YouTube. Invest in a teacher when you start to hit ruts. It’s a waste to pay for lessons in the very beginning. It’s all on you at that point anyway. Don’t give up. It’s a lot of fun. It’s like golf. You don’t have to be the good to enjoy it every day

when i first started I first learned all my open chords like E Em G C D A Am F (youtube is good for that) mostly practice transitioning the chords and developing that muscle memory for those chords then after a while when you feel comfortable do some scale work that takes time to memorize and apply to songs you should look up some theory after some time like what keys are played over what song when to solo when not to solo things like that

I started playing a few months ago. Go to the music board. Lots of great advice there.
I am using a online course - Justin Guitar
I am also taking lessons now
I am practicing alot finally. Its not easy but its a ton of fun. I am doing a combination of things. Practicing the chords and trying to get them to feel natural. Working on the things from my lessons the most. About one or two times per week, I am working on something fun. I am trying to learn a song that I love and that is keeping it fun....
