Reporting Car Sale to DMV Without Bill of Sale?

So last year I sold my car through Facebook Marketplace. I am fairly certain I reported this to the DMV at the time of the sale, but I just received a renewal reminder for the car I sold. What's strange is that I have not received a renewal notice for the car I did not sell. I HAVE received a renewal notice for the new car I purchased when I sold the other car.
I'm thinking they removed the wrong vehicle from my file, which is strange because I'm sure they would have had to enter in the VIN. But I'm not totally sure.
Here's where a problem arises: From what I've read, the DMV will need to see the bill of sale, but I no longer have it. We scanned it into the computer after the sale, but that computer was replaced. I'm not sure what happened to hard copy but I can't find it.
So what's the protocol here if they say I never reported the sale and I don't have a bill of sale?

Not your vehicle anymore. Sounds like a new owner problem.

Well...sounds easy enough then.

It sounds like you're just gonna have to find the new owner and PIIHB.

every state has different laws regarding auto sales. I live in La and buy and sell cars frequently. I always go through the same title company and never have a problem. I don't know if Al is a notary state or not.
