It's worth stating that the sum they're talking about isn't a traditional arithmetic sum.

You seem like you might be better educated on the subject than me. Can you explain what exactly that means in layman terms?

Ramanujan Summations

quote:

Ramanujan summation is a technique invented by the mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan for assigning a value to infinite divergent series. Although the Ramanujan summation of a divergent series is not a sum in the traditional sense, it has properties which make it mathematically useful in the study of divergent infinite series, for which conventional summation is undefined.

If you scroll down to the section on divergent series, they have the 1 + 2 + 3 + ... example. But the sum of the natural numbers in a traditional "arithmetic" sense is divergent-- or infinite. What they're using in the video is more of a tool that allows for the math to work out on some problems, but it's not the same thing-- if that makes any sense at all.

I don't care about stuff that comes from reddit, but when you take a bunch of people's posts and don't even link to where you got it, it's pretty shitty IMO. whatever though.

FWIW, I enjoyed the thread.

Exactly!

I guess that I get some elements of the concept, but I don't entirely put all the pieces together in a way that makes sense to me. What determines when either concept is appropriate to use or when the Ramanujan summation won't work? Or is that getting too technical or unexplainable?
