I was in Detroit for work a few months back, it was my first time there since I was a kid. There wasn't a single time where I felt unsafe while I was there, but I also stayed towards the touristy areas.

My coworker and I went to Miller's in Dearborn. Food was good for it's price, interesting atmostphere..felt like I was back in the 70s. They do the honor system when you pay and they only take cash. I'd go back for sure.

One word... Suburbs....

Go into Detroit during the day for Tigers games (Must do) and really nothing else. When going into Detroit you will know the minute you are in Detroit.

Weather is fantastic this time a year, so enjoy.

Last time I was flying out of DTW, I had a gun waved at me by one of the local indigenous personnel who apparently didn't approve of my driving skills. It was mid-morning, so maybe he was tired from his all night crime spree. It was one of my first times seeing 24's, so I had unconsciously slowed down to check them out.

If you insist on going, then my recommendation is to make sure your life insurance and beneficiaries are all updated.

I agree that Detroit is fascinating. so much history left to ruin.
