Brian Bryant, an employee at Wyandot Snacks, load a pallet of snacks that were shipped to Port Barre, Louisiana for relief from the impacts of Hurricane Ida. Wyandot Snacks sent more than 29,000 bags of chips to the area on Sept. 7, 2021.

On Tuesday afternoon, an ODW Logistics truck arrived into the Wyandot Snacks parking lot to begin loading pre-packed snack foods.

While it was a normal day of loading-trucks, this particular truck was heading to a different destination. After Hurricane Ida destroyed many parts of Louisiana, these bags of snacks are going to impacted families struggling with the conditions.

By the end of the day, a total of 29,752 bags of chips, or 50 pallets worth, were loaded onto a 53-foot semi-truck and shipped to Port Barre, Louisiana.

Each of the white boxes on pallets pictured here were sent to Louisiana for relief from the impacts of Hurricane Ida as a part of an effort from Wyandot Snacks in Marion.

Don Mount, senior advisor with Wyandot Snacks, said they just wanted to help out and knew addressing hunger issues was where they could be most useful.

According to online reports, Hurricane Ida has become the second most damaging hurricane on record behind Hurricane Katrina. This resulted in more than a million people living in the state without power. Additionally, reports state there have been at least 12 deaths as a result of the hurricane and researchers are still collecting data from storm sensors and rainfall reports.

This is why Wyandot Snacks teamed up with the American Red Cross to donate snacks to Louisiana. After establishing Wyandot's b-corporation which focuses on fighting hunger on a regional and national level, Mount said the team has been actively helping out in national disasters like this, which included donating goods to California last year during the wildfires.

A large variety of snacks will be sent to Port Barre from the Munch Right brand, a product from Wyandot Snacks. These include the cheddar and sour cream puffs as well as the cinnamon apple puffs. Some of the snacks being donated will come in personal-sized options while others will be the larger five-ounce bags.
