Flipping Memory foam mattress and adding topper

I have an older king memory foam mattress that is starting to hurt my back. I am going to get a new one for the house, but I was wondering if this one is salvageable for the camp. I would like to flip it over so that the base firm foam is on the top and then adding a 3" topper to it.
Has anyone done this before? Did it work?
