Saw him for the first time in the early 90's in downtown Houston at party on the plaza, a Friday afternoon event that had some damn good acts. It was a blue bird summer afternoon, Houston was booming with 20 somethings from all over the south fresh out of college and these events were a blast. He did this, Billy the Kid and Road Goes on Forever back to back to back and sang the ever living shite out of each of them. Some of the best 20 minutes of live music I ever heard before or since.

Saw him a dozen times since and he never mailed it in. Charlie Robison hit hard, this one hits even harder. RIP Joe.
