Cliff Gleaves is best remembered for being a close friend of Elvis (he'd drop by Graceland whenever he was in Memphis). He never sniffed commercial success; this is in fact the first track of his I've ever heard.

Elvis' entourage in Jailhouse Rock, 1957: Arthur Hooton, Cliff Gleaves, Gene Smith, Elvis, George Klein, Lamar Fike and Junior Smith

Great remake of a Junior Parker song also on Sun, so Sam got to keep the publishing

quote:

raw, powerful, passionate garage-country from this incredible Navajo band out of New Mexico. They were one of the first "Chapterhouse Bands", a name coined by ethnomusicologist Kristina Jacobsen "to denote the first generation of Navajo bands to play popular music". They were apparently hugely popular in their day and, according to the liner notes, "were the number one band on the Window Rock Reservation", the seat of government and capital of the Navajo Nation. This song was originally written and performed by Johnny Horton. This version absolutely rips.

Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan - "Bethlehem Steel" (1969)

They would later do the immortal "Tennessee Birdwalk"

Billy Eldridge and The Fireballs - "Let's Go Baby"(1959)

Near the end he imitates Elvis' stutter vocal on "Baby Let's Play House"

A 1966 hixploitation jukebox musical starring Earl Sinks, forever to be known as the guy who replaced Buddy Holly in The Crickets (his finest musical hour: singing lead on the original 1960 version of "I Fought The Law")
