Something new I have noticed about The Sopranos upon rewatch...(Cinematography)

The entire look of the show changed around season 4. The cinematography is completely different in 4-6. It's darker and shadowy. It's is night and day compared to the brightly lit and more traditional cinematography of 1-3. Starting around Season 5 the show was shot more artsy as well. To me the show looks way better in the later seasons and very auteur-ish. I don't know if the intention was to make the look and feel more dark as the series itself got darker and more bleak, but man what a noticeable contrast.

yeh brighter more vivid colors early on and a slow shift to gray and dullness. For instance, they shot the whole Tony B season in winter (supposed to be summer) but it makes it look grey. I think its to foreshadow the sense of dread moving toward the end.

Is that when things switched to HD?

Not sure, season 4 was in 2002 so that was before HD really took over

there has been a lot of discussion about this, and with David Chase saying nothing is in the show by accident, I personally think its to serve the ever darkening story for Tony.
