i still think the bj contract was good value at the time. i know he is and was a flawed player, but we desperately needed an outfielder and he was the youngest guy with the best tools. it was a good move by wren imo to lock him up as quickly as he did.

the uggla and cj extensions were questionable and dumb, and i wasn't as big of a fan of the freeman and kimbrel extensions.

wren has also done a ton of things right tho. the bullpens he's constantly put together plus some of his trades have been great.

also, i will continue to criticize fredi when he does things like intentionally walk fricking ryan howard in the first inning with runners on second and third and one out

From my perspective the Uggla extension was worse at the time. I expected Uggla's skillset to deteriorate pretty quickly. If BJ could just give you what he gave you in Tampa it was a decent deal. I still think BJ is a 2-3 WAR player/yr over the next 2 or 3 years.

Yeah, the Uggla contract was much worse simply because anyone could have predicted his skillset would erode quickly in his early 30s. How quickly his skills went down was surprising, but the last couple years of that contract were destined to be ugly regardless.

BJ is really the same as Uggla though, just with decent defense. It's not surprising when guys who barely hit .240 in their primes go down quickly. That being said, Bourn would have been an equally bad signing.

Wren has done a great job with trades, but the contracts he has given out have been iffy at best.
