When most of us speak, air from our lungs resonates in our throats (the throat and nasal cavity) and passes into the mouth, where we move our tongue and lips with air to produce sound. Normal nasal balance occurs when most of the airflow is coming from the mouth when we speak. You can feel it by putting your hand up to your mouth when you speak- you will feel warm, soft air. When there is a disruption of the structures and or the coordination of the speech system, nasal speech problems may occur.
