For those unfamiliar with his father’s story I recommend the ESPN 30 for 30 Unguarded. It’s a sad story about a guy who had it all and couldn’t overcome addiction. It’s incredible he’s still alive considering how much damage he did to his body. He’s now a motivational speaker where he tells his story.
Herren was an excellent high school basketball prospect in 1994. He was a McDonalds All American and scored over 2,000 points in high school and turned down big time offers from Kentucky and Duke to stay home and play at Boston College. He broke his wrist in his first game at BC and missed the rest of his freshman season but was ultimately kicked off the team and expelled from the school due to multiple failed drug tests.
He ended up transferring to Fresno State where he had a solid career playing for the great Jerry Tarkanian. After being drafted in the 2nd round by the Nuggets in 1999 he flamed out after only 2 seasons in the NBA and played in Europe afterward but didn’t get clean until about 10 years ago.

It's a really powerful documentary. Not my favorite from the entire series, but certainly the most haunting.
