I bought a home a few years ago and wasn’t told that I needed to go personally file a homestead exemption with the tax assessor’s office. Because it was my first home I had no idea. I only realized this because I recently purchased a new house and, at the closing, they gave me an instruction sheet on filing for the homestead exemption....

I’m wondering if anyone has ever had this issue? Any luck getting a refund? Doubtful, but do I have a claim against the title company for breaching a duty to advise me? Looks like I over paid about $800 a year for five years

This happened to me a couple years back. They refunded my mortgage company for the years that I overpaid, then my mortgage company refunded me.

Thanks. Did you go to the assessors office? How many years did they go back?
